The Emperor’s boon

Lucille insisted that he should have a pair of elemental sword cultivators as bodyguards if he left the palace, so his shadows stood back as Daimon joined the group at the East Dojo.

Danae was there with Krysta and Emy as well as the guys Nathan, Patrick and David.

Patrick was a bow cultivator and of course Danae had her saber, but the rest of the group used swords.

They matched up informally even practicing some moves and counter-moves at slow speed.

After a few rounds Daimon was paired up with Danae again.

He found a couple of ways to counter the counter and manage to succeed for part of the spar.

After the training, the group went to the nearby eaterie. But Daimon stayed back with Danae and they walked through town, the evening air cooling down.

“Have you had a girlfriend before?” Danae asked out of the blue.

“I was focused on other things I guess. So no.”

“Is your mom going to do something crazy if we do this?”

“I’m 35 I think it’s past time that I can make some of my own decisions. I get that 35 feels young from 330, but still, no it’s not a problem.”

“Do you want to?”

When Daimon kissed her, she felt wrapped up by a sphere of water.

“Oh oops,“ he said and retracted the water sphere which had appeared. “There are a few unusual things I was born with.”

“I don’t care,” Danae said and kissed him back.

***

Her 35 year old son was falling in love for the first time. Which had more impact that usual because of his divine gift. Strategically, she couldn’t say she understood but Lucy had married early, and it would be better to keep a distance.

“He likes that Danae practices a different cultivation art. I liked that David was part of a sailing club, something our caretaker would never do.

I think I convinced him to take things slow. Maybe he’ll have consorts someday like his father but he should give it time.”

“Daimon Sr never did woo any others than me.”

“He’s too innocent to expect that now, but someday soon, girls will learn how to appeal to him, and there will be many.”

“You’ve still been empowered?” Anna asked.

“Yep and we’ve got a couple of Cultivation docs that show he is doing fine.”

**

Daimon didn’t really have any hobbies growing up. Swords and later on cultivation was his hobby.

Their little gathering of cultivations introduced him to several new hobbies.

Bouncing a small ball between the six of them without cultivation powers was fine, and last night he learned more about wine.

*

“Mom’s going to cook, not Aunt Lucille?”

He was hosting dinner with his group of friends. He had no idea his mom cooked at all.

It turned out that mom was learning from his aunt and she had a recipe from back in the old days of her Sword sect.

“There were a couple of people in Ant clan who knew this recipe,” mom said.

It was hard to imagine his mom ever being in a clan called Ant clan.

The butler went to the door to greet their guests,

Daimon looked at what mom was making. Potatoes were pretty easy to get around here, but the cheese and meet were staples of mom’s homeland.

“How did you find ground beef?” He asked.

“There’s a trader Lucille knows, he just got a shipment of beef in and I asked the local butcher to grind it. Turns out I had to go by a grinder for another local. That’s the butchers own if we want to make it again.

Cheesy ground beef potatoes fed our whole Ant clan, and it was tasty too. Lucille added a couple of adjustments for the different spices around here.”

“Good evening Grand Elders, my emperor,” Danae said. The others of the group greeted everyone more formally.

“My mother is cooking a famous recipe from her old clan.”

“They must have been special.”

“They were but it’s been 370 years since I was asked to leave the sect and Ant clan. Female sword cultivators were not allowed, and I knew the sword was my way. So I pretended to be a man early in my career. During my shimmering tribulation I was stuck because of my identity. I decided to he neither man or woman and progressed to Shimmering. Even that lead the sect to expel me.”

“So you’ve spent most of your life as a loose cultivator?” One of Danae’s friends asked.

“Much of it. But I had groups I was affiliated with for a time. Lucille and I started a sect, but it grew so fast they lost their values. And I was the first and only consort of Daimon’s father. I trained under three mighty Divine cultivators who served Daimon’s father and would serve him.

The guilders were born during those days. When the Emperor laid down their charters he expected loyalty and found treason.

Tim and my sister have been my helpers and guides through many years as well.”

**

Tim had always thought of himself as a follower of Anna’s philosophy of the sword. But she had changed in the Eternal realm and he expected he would too.

He didn’t expect that he would realize the relationship between a junior and senior cultivator would be nothing into Eternal realm.

He had never experienced Divine realm, and picking up a second sword was strange. 5 generations back his great grand-uncle was a sword cultivator. He didn’t even know, but he realized it didn’t matter. Time was meaningless.

The difference between one cultivator bowing down to another, and disregarding another was only time, so one should always respect fellow Daoists.

Without knowing it, Tim unleashed Eternal cultivation bearing swords of Respect and Protection.

A sword can only protect by destroying the danger, a sword can only respect by breaking through the lies of the disrespecting.

The swords called to him, to go live with the junior sworders in Daimon’s empire. He will need to disguise, but respect knows that sometimes to do trust see the truth respect of a person requires that little deception.

How one treats their juniors says more than how they treat seniors and contemporaries.

Those who try to reap the juniors will find a strong protector within them,

The two spirits of his swords were somewhat unusual. If time was meaningless, then past and present versions of a person could both exist in spirit form.

Anna, from what must have been her early days as a sworder. She was dressed mannishly but he would recognize her anywhere.

And the other spirit was his great-great uncle, representing a wise but not overly-powerful protector. Some who took a chance to save.

***

Tim is gone from his sanctuary, Daimon said.

“He is following the call of his swords,” Anna said. I’m sure his call will be different than mine.”

 ***

Most of the Shadows tier sworders were still part of the main army training. He disregarded trying to join in with them or the mortal sworders.

He was interested in following the group Daimon spent time with as well. He initially joined another group of shimmering cultivators that interacted with Danae and Daimon’s group.

At shimmering stage, many cultivators had trouble with control so spars were discourage at full power level. Mostly they sparred at peak shadows power level.

There were an endless variety of training exercises, and sometimes things did get heated and shimmering power was unleashed during a spar.

Tim looked like a young cultivator, and he took his place encouraging the others to work through the exercises, and trying to offer a reasonable amount of advice.

Eventually he joined his first sparring session with the group. It was surprisingly hard not to dominate from hundreds of years of practice and real fighting.

He could access the shadows stage but it was surprising hard to restrain himself compared to when he was an elemental cultivator.

After a couple spars, he was accepted in the group but everyone mentioned preparing for the first annual tournament.

He had totally forgot about that tournament. There were 30 elemental cultivators in the Empire and Anna and he had agreed it was important to assess them. Adding in the shadows and shimmering cultivators had come later.

“I’ll be there, he promised before leaving.” He would have to meet with Anna in secret to explain what he was trying to do. He could return to normal after the tournament.”

**

Anna was quietly chaperoning Daimon’s pre-tournament bar crawl. She was several blocks away from the group but she could hear most of what was being said.

Eternal implied small differences in space were not a big deal.

At first she thought one of the elemental cultivators had a question for her, but then it was unmistakeable. A brand new Eternal cultivator was broadcasting their Princeps. She thought she was better at controlling hers now if she did find another Eternal cultivator.

He pulled her into an alleyway. There was a newfound confident strength in him.

“I’m not ready to come back yet, but I wanted you to know, I’m in disguise with a group of shimmering cultivators. It’s not Daimon and Danae’s group but they are close friends with their group. I hope to demonstrate respect if it’s in need of demonstrating.”

After the talking, Tim kissed her fiercely.

It may have taken the eternal realm to get there, but he was a man now.

**

Derek watched as the shadow rounds of the tournament were held.

Tournament scale suppression equipment was just becoming available in the area. The arrival of an expert in maintaining such power suppression systems was what allowed the tournament to happen.

120 rings were set for the Shadow cultivators of the Alliance. 30 rings for the Iron or equivalent cultivators, 6 rings for himself and the other shimmering cultivators and 1 ring for the ultimate contest between Elemental cultivators.

No one was sure how to contain the powers their leaders could unleash. And even the elemental ring cost more than all 120 shadow realm rings.

Fire was rippling through his Qi, his transformation to being a new elemental cultivator would happen immediately after this tournament. He could borrow The powers of Fire to defeat all of his competitors.

***

It was pandemonium how Anna had arranged the tournament. The early rounds of all the tournaments would be played simultaneously on the 157 suppression rings.

Many medical cultivators had signed up for any extra healing required beyond what could be suppressed.

The members of his shimmering group were gradually sent hour by hour to one of the six shimmering rings. Those who lost joined the cordoned off viewing areas.

Since he was taking a spot from the others he wanted to give everyone he defeated an insight.

His first opponent overextended and tried to win the fight in one surge. Demonstrating the flaws of the plan. Tim defeated the combatant without using any additional strength, simply playing a defensive game and exploiting overreaches.

“Excellent form. Mister Virani” said an elemental cultivator who was watching.

4 of their group made it past the first round. In the second round he fought a cultivator who had become a bit too stuck their ways, using only a few standard moves. They were one of the few bow cultivators in the Empire.

They would fire an arrow, execute a special shield maneuver and then wait to fire again when the shield ran out.

One thing you couldn’t limit yourself on was your toughness, but it was a good lesson anyway, never expect an afraid opponent.

He attacked when his opponent attacked and then when the shield effect failed.

His third round opponent had a strong late-shimmering control of his cultivation, but his battle and tactical sense was lacking. Identifying the lesson this one needed, he struck as soon as battle began, his foe stumbled, but managed to recover with abundant shimmering power. Focusing on infusing his sword with his power, his opponent was forced to hurriedly unleash the power to stop Tim’s second assault.

This guy did have a bit more acumen, but such short cut abilities never had the same cohesion strength.  His struck the near-elemental cauldron of qi and the attack backfired.

Unfortunately, his sparring partner’s power was so close to peak shimmering that the backlash hurt him through the suppression.

Healers came to the ring, one of them said to him. “A very finely done disrupt. There are not many who could learn such a thing. Don’t feel guilty about that.”

There were some byes through the first few rounds so that they were left 64 shimmering cultivators after three rounds.

The final 16 of each cultivation group would fight sequentially until the grand finale. The 15 elemental cultivators who had won their first match, plus the winner of the shimmering finale would battle for the grand prize.

The top shadows, iron and shimmering cultivators would also receive a prize.

Daimon had received a bye to the round of 64, and many of the top shimmering cultivators had similar byes through to 128.

Tim’s fourth round was against one of Danae’s friends.

**

“We thought he was tested for a moment in the third round, but no. He’s been extremely professional but our friends in Katie’s group said he joined about four months ago. My guess is he’s someone new with experience in the army somewhere else. Low-mid shimmering with a ton of experience. I wish the Grand Elder was here to offer his thoughts,” Danae said.

“What should I do?” Asked Emily.

“Make it a battle of qi. Don’t give him an excuse to trick you.”

Danae watched as Emily uncomfortably flung herself towards the stranger. The qi was wildly off kilter. It was  truly dangerous for both of them. Had she not seen how this Jacob disrupted his last opponents attack.

Instead of facing the attack, Jacob showed surprising speed and avoided it, skirted away and to the side.

Emily desperately tried to recover, she parried two blows but one of them was deflected with her fist only and the next send her to the group.

Emily was upset and the medics took a quick look at her so she didn’t talk to Danae.

She had to fight Jeffrey from another strong group next.

Jeffrey was a good positional, counter attacking cultivator. High shimmering as most of those remaining were. She thought she was reasonably good tactically, medium shimmering, but Daimon told her they’d been a more advanced tactical group compared to the norm.

Daimon learned from the Grand Elder and his mother, the Eternal Elder. And he taught the rest of the group a lot.

Jeffry started with big heavy chopping attacks. If you tried to dodge them only slightly, you would find they had a hidden width to them.

She stepped way away from some and deflected others. The first fifteen seconds of battle was reactive, then she began to demonstrate shimmering multiplicity. Her sword lost its form and became multiple strike in a major echo of shadow sword fighting.

Jeffry tried to burst through them with his power firm, and deflect them with impressive hand speed, but after she avoided the super-chop she resumed her quick attacks and Jeffry was overwhelmed and at last unable to stop one of her shimmers from cutting.

He had an impressive plan A but he couldn’t stop her plan.

**

Daimon dodged the powerful spear qi, rotating to push the wielder even further.

Each attack of Mariah’s spear threatened to crush through his defenses.

He poked at Mariah’s defenses when he could.

Finally he fell to a spear strike. He expected to be thrown out of the ring, an automatic loss. At least down long enough to fall to the follow up.

Mariah struggled to follow up. Repositioning the spear was slow. He rose and deflected a spear that wasn’t expecting him ready.

The intense feeling of the fight fell away to a comfortable back and forth battle. It became clear that Mariah was struggling to ensure his attacks. At three minutes it was the longest fight in the shimmering tournament.

Finally his sword struck true and deep, and the suppression resisted his sword.

Mariah was impaled by it so Daimon waited for the medics to properly remove his sword.

It was his new sword since his coronation.

*

Daimon and Danae both advanced to the Round of 32. Which would be the last round before the final 16s in each stage were played.

With the elemental cultivators waiting for the grand finale, Anna was free to watch them both.

It was obvious who Tim was, his Eternals were still way too loud to her. He had kept his battles clinical to teach something to each matchup.

She made sure Daimon and Danae were in different quadrants of the bracket and tried to seed things reasonably.

Daimon had an easier matchup this round than last. Also his last battle seemed to give him more confidence. She wanted to see Daimon able to cultivate and defend himself so she was happy.

Lucille was busy with various guests who had come to watch the tournament.

Danae matched with an opponent who was very resilient and shrugged off her multi-attacks. She was tough as well, and both fighters resisted each other’s attacks.

Danae was able to shift to a more concentrated attack style and eke out a victory.

Tim demonstrated the three option tactical approach to his opponent. When both sides could counter each other’s attacks finding the right attack to out-think the opponent was key.

His opponent was still trying to counter Tim’s first attack and he had moved on from it.

One of the shimmering combatants was days away from breaking into Elemental cultivation. He was relying only the pseudo-elemental power to dominate his opponents.

With each group down to 16 cultivators there was a short break while the finale stage was getting ready. The rest of the contests would be fought in the final ring with everyone’s attention.

**

Daimon and the other shimmering finalists congratulated the Shadows and Iron finalists, and the elemental finalists greeted everyone also.

“Good job guys, no matter what happens from here, you’ve accomplished something special.”

The final shadows matchup was a battle between two cultivators beginning to establish Iron sword cultivation. The final Iron cultivation matchup was more tactical.

He felt confident, even as everyone was the best.

When the dust settled, the final two rounds loomed. A peak Shimmering cultivator who wasn’t especially tactical was his next opponent, while Danae faced the tactical master who no one knew.

They were excited to make it this far, but the idea of making it to the finals was more exciting.

Daimon wasn’t sure if he could endure peak shimmering, but he planned to battle ferociously, and they were fighting in a ring with elemental level protection so he was fine.

He polished his sword and went out to the ring for the first match of the Shimmering semis.

Daimon was ready to evade if Derek unleashed his ultimate peak shimmering attacks.

It was only after a bit of establishing guard positions abs feeling out his opponents strength that he was struck by Derek’s sword. His deflection had been completely overrun by the power of Derek’s attack, and it was all Daimon could do to remember mom and get up. The second attack was obviously elemental as fire started to burn through his abdomen until the suppression caught up.

Danae was there, and mom. They helped the medics take him back to be healed. He felt tingly, and a bit nauseous.

**

The tournament paused for twenty minutes as the directors wanted to look after the Emperor before continuing.

Derek stood apart from the other remaining competitors and no one went to talk to them.

Finally Daimon, Anna and Lucille returned. Daimon welcomed back his guards who had been forced to watch, and they formed a cordon around the Daimon so he could watch the rest of the matches.

Danae was very good, in high shimmering but she couldn’t adjust and find tactical solutions as quickly as their mystery opponent.

Jacob did reveal that he was at least upper-mid shimmering, countering a power strike if Danae’s with one of his own.

The crowd didn’t know Jacob, but they were politely encouraging him. “Don’t let him intimidate you!” One of the elemental 15 left said.

Finally the Shimmering finals began.

**

He couldn’t just overpower Jacob so Derek instead used the possibly of a victorious chain reaction to control and confine what Jacob could do.

Jacob had been hiding his full strength and now he unleashed high tier but not speak shimmering.

Not good enough, Derek struck in one place, and feinted in another.

**

Tim knew, Derek believed his elemental attacks could not be stopped in shimmering. The kid had forgotten that in a real battle there was always someone stronger and to an elemental cultivator his attacks were weak and poorly formed.

When Daimon reached high Shimmering he would show off a few ways to resist such poorly firmed attacks. Without actually ascending into Elemental, Derek couldn’t form a good attack and this kind of thing would actually harm his cultivation long-term.

Trying to stay in a lower realm to win a tournament was the opposite of the message they wanted to send.

He had wanted to defeat Derek with purely tactical skill but showing him that there’s a higher target was more important.

Tim took the Fire attack head on and did not flinch. He had no intent of actually attacking, but to make the point stick, one sword became two, and the spirit of a young Anna appeared and deflected Derek’s next attack. His uncle appeared and with the tiniest wisp of power repelled the attack.

“Ok you’ve made your point.”

Anna took the stage then. “Let me explain. When a cultivator reaches Eternal stage, there is always something that drives them, which they must act on immediately. For me, it was the injustice of the guilders.

Tim has reached the Eternal stage, and his drive was to protect the spirit of respectful exchange of pointers. Our second Eternal Elder! Tim?”

“My guiding principles in the Eternal realm have become respect and protection, so I could only pursue protecting respectful behavior.

I hoped to impart a lesson in each of my battles today. Not to show that I’m better. I’ve spent most of my life looking up to Anna, and seeing her as better. But from an Eternal perspective, we all ate the cultivator we began with on the first day, and the person we will become at our pinnacle.

Any motions of pride and superiority based on cultivation stage or anything else are foolish.

These tournaments are a chance to hone your abilities, not to adhere to the group definitions by the letter of the law so you can dominate.

Derek, you are on the edge of Elemental cultivation, the most important thing to focus on is preparing for your rise. Secondly, to challenge yourself, and center yourself in the new realm.

It was not fair for you to face an Eternal opponent, proceed to join the Elemental final 16. It will help you understand what world awaits.

Anna and I do not know what awaits us in eternity, no one knows where they can go until they start to explore.

Losing a sparring match is often more beneficial than winning.”

**

Tim’s performance without ever stepping beyond Shimmering realm showed just how skilled their eternal elders were.

No one was sure if 2 eternal elders could exchange pointers safely, but everyone wanted to watch that fight.

Daimon and Danae were the only ones who had a chance to, however.

“It’s just the safe, low power limit of eternal, but still,” Danae said.

The training center his mom and Tim had built for their spars were made of ridiculously tough materials, but it shone as the two clashed.

“Finally Tim has reached an equal strength to mom.”

“Why does Tim had a sword spirit that looks like your mom?”

“It’s my mom as a young sworder. Eternal realm is weird like that. One of mom’s spirits is my dad, the other is the spirit of a sword that was destroyed.”

*^^

Tim and Anna decided to go temper their abilities in real combat. With Lucille in the Divine realm, the Empire should be safe.

They rooted out guilder strongholds and fought a few battles to contain necromancy, but it was another Sect nation which made them pause.

**

Six months after Tim and Anna left, Lucille had to lead the Empire in defense against a group of clans. Nomadic they had wandered into the area and started to raid and take whatever they wanted.

Two weeks in, Lucille had settled one of the war chiefs in a valley near Empire lands, the other war chiefs were slain. Lucille established a rule. Be the first to surrender and gain benefits.

**

Anna and Tim were lurking about pretending to be Shimmering cultivators in a mercenary army.

Lucille kept Anna informed and asked for advice, but ultimately her incredible persuasion was able to convince part of the enemy to turn against the invaders.

**

Lucille taught them for a while, since Damian’s mom was gone, hunting Guilder enemies.

Danae reached Elemental realm first. Earth wasn’t a common element in their family’s story but when the earths appeared with that golden color, she sighed. Danae must at least become a Consort, like Anna had been.

Finding Anna and Tim she told them everything that had happened, and they set about searching the land for two worthy sabers for a divine cultivators and consort.

***

Danae’s whole family were here. The Emperor’s had sold some land for the clan at a very competitive price. So they would move here after the ceremony.

Her mother-in-law became a companion throughout the process. Danae’s dress was more expensive than she could imagine.

“First you will become his consort. A new wing of the palace has been built as your residence. But then, the time will come yo be his wife, to join him in everything. I went through this with his father.”

“What was Daimon Sr like?”

“Strong, yet gentle. Young, yet wise. He was 260 years younger than me yet his wisdom was beyond his youth. Eventually he became an Air elemental cultivator and we would medicate together as his Air burbled within my waters. Let his waters rest against your Earth, and you will both have wisdom beyond.”

~~

“It is traditional in my birth land, to gift my Consort-to-be two weapons. One which represents her lineage or heritage and one that represents the empire’s own.

As to the latter, as we are newly establish I drew on the old traditions of my mother’s homeland. At great effort, our Elders recovered a saber of one of the Saints of old. The Saint was fallen from grace, but his Saber shall serve my empire. It is my gift to you, to consecrate my devotion to you, Consort Murray.”

“Thank you, your highness, I will protect this gift, and learn from the spirit of this Saber.”

“The first saber will be known as the Saber of the Mountain. It does not yield to any strike below the Eternal realm. This saber was forged by the greatest known smiths, strengthened by the rare earths of your clan’s homelands. We hope to honor your elders as we accept you as our own. A century from now, it will become a mighty spirit weapon as well.”

*

There was something different in that Daimon was both the Emperor and source of divine power, whereas Anna never figured out how much Daimon Sr had access to the centuries old source of power in the old empire.

Tim and I had gone to dinner at the Old Emperor’s city. More and more the original Emperor was being swallowed up by Daimon’s empire.

There was a sudden shift in the power of Daimon’s divinity, and Tim and I both noticed immediately.

But then again Daimon Sr was so young that I never had sex with him until we were married. That was different this time around.

They had returned to their normal duties, residing in the ‘Senior Wing’ of the palace.

“Perhaps I could dress up as young Anna?” I teased Tim.

So the akwardness went both ways until Daimon requested their presence.

“I want to recognize Tim as my father, not to replace Dad, mom but you have been another Dad, and it’s not weird to me. Can we have some kind of ceremony for you two?” Daimon asked.

“How should I address you, Mother of my beloved?”

“Hmm I never had a daughter. You can call me mom or mother. Now I think you two need to actually get married. For your dad and I, this was a quiet ceremony and quite personal to us. Eventually it would be publicized of course.”

Eternal Realm

The Guilds withdrew after the fighting but Tim knew they were not gone for good.

“I think I need to step away and go into seclusion for a while to stabilize my foundation. Every other stage of cultivation has made sense but this ultimate stage does not.”

“I may be following you in a few years, but I want to keep my eyes peeled for the guilds.”

It was a series of quiet years, as far as war was concerned at least. 4 other nations joined the empire in the Northeast Treaty.

Emperor Veer granted Daimon and our group a small plot of land, and some of the militia members we had trained started to build homes in the area. Especially the 8 who had been empowered by Daimon vowed their loyalty. To him.

Daimon’s late teens and early twenties were spent with these men and woman and with Lucille who gave him a crash course in administration.

It wasn’t really a large enough holding to call Daimon a king, but the settlement and their joining in the Northwest Treaty brought them a bright future.

3 years into his mother’s seclusion, Tim went into seclusion himself. Mom was still secluded in Emperor Veer’s palace while Tim stayed at the new home Daimon’s followers had built for him.

“If war breaks out again, wake me again,” he said.

Daimon trained with his militia members and occasionally with Veer when he traveled over to stay with Daimon.

He was in mid-shadows but he had to remind himself that Mom and Tim had trained for hundreds of years.

**

Lucille was a favorite representative for the Northeast treaty members. She helped navigate disagreements, and brought in some new treaty partners who offered substantial concessions to join the growing power bloc.

Her cultivation of the Word advanced into the Crystalline realm.

Tim was surprised to not see Anna when he left seclusion.

Together with Daimon they went to the palace she had been staying in and found she was gone.

“To solidify my cultivation, I must travel. I will return, my loves.”

***

It started with just a few expeditions of guilders. None of them were Divinely promised, and no one even noted the battle that ended them. A hostile Divine-bearer was reaping their expeditions.

Gathering into few groups, the Mission continued in shows of forces.

The first time a Divine-promised died with no sign of a fight, the leadership became quite panicked, a pattern emerged, the assassin must have come from a particular plan to he able to reach their targets,

The call of the six guilds was made, including their members back home, but they had encountered a foe beyond what they knew existed.

**

From an eternal perspective, every moment is as real or unreal as the next. Anna did not possess that eternal perspective on everything, but only a certain micro fracture around swords.

At first she had wept when Aida/Aiden and the spirits of the Consort sword and the Covenant sword appeared. Aida contained the eternal memory of her first sword, to lose it was fallacy.

If she had once fought with five swords so she had always. It was a different style of fighting than the old divine multi-sword technique. The connection of her hands renewed the sword she held more greatly than the others.

She would have stuck with Aida as her primary sword, except that a few weeks after her advancement, the spirit of Daimon Sr. Imbued with the covenant sword.

So, not really knowing the full ramifications she began to wield Unveiling and Covenant.

Daimon was the one who pushed her to test her abilities against the guilders. Now she was rushing into battle against four semi-divine cultivators.

She saved her third sword to strike the other camp full of cultivators. Aida was her defense and Daimon struck with a roaring power.

It was weird transcending the old elemental perspective. Aida used water, but Daimon was air aspected like he really had been.

Rooting out the source of their power Aida and Daimon struck together severing another cultivator’s divine connection.

Aida then cut left and Daimon right as they deflected strikes coming at them. Weaving the two swords she stopped tracking where each struck.

The reverie paused for a moment when she realized she cut through a mental attack like mortal sworders cut through fruit.

The Sword and Fan guild struck and she took a minor blow from one sword to cut through three ideas and their wielders. Lucille was much better.

Considering that she had dove too deep she began to retreat, putting pressure on the juniors, and leading to a panic in the enemy group.

**

There is some new danger the guilders now fear: after some investigation, I think it is an individual of the peak realms.” Lucille told Daimon.

“Is it my mother, seeking revenge?”

“She would have to be more powerful than she was during the siege of 9 sects. She rosé temporarily into High Divine stage during that time.”

“Crystalline stage could go that high if no one we know had even been mid-crystalline.”

The concept of peak Crystalline state was absurd to Daimon, given he was still struggling his way up to high tier shadows.

***

Life at court and cultivation continued for Daimon, but one day, his new advisor told him that a traveling cultivator would like a word with him.

It wasn’t that unusual to greet a traveler and sometimes they had become part of his court.

Daimon had a pretty strong perception of a cultivator’s core, and this woman had no elemental leaning at all. There was simply a solid feeling to her frame.

It was almost how he would imagine his maternal grandparents being.

Permission was given and the traveler introduced herself to Tim.

Tim was the Empire’s strongest cultivator until mom came back. He had advanced to mid-crystalline stage.

Daimon had never seen the swords that his father gave his mother. He knew mom mentioned Aida or Aiden a lot.

The mystery cultivator started battling Tim with two swords. Tim was confident after one sword of his challenger shattered but it reformed in moments.

Then Tim stopped as two spirits flowed sout of the stronger’s swords.

“I can’t even tell that you’re water aligned.”

“Eternal realm leaves behind elements. It’s not easy to describe until you reach the realm.

*^

The guilders avoided attacking members of their alliance, which lead more polities to join them.

It was hard for Tim, being unable to withstand Anna’s full power and that hindered training for both of thrm.

So he went back into seclusion in hopes of unlocking its power.

Tim had had a sparring partner and excellent training his entire cultivation career. As he pursued the Eternal path, he realized he hadn’t established his own identity very well. If he wanted to truly be an equal partner with Anna in life and love he needed to have something of his own to bring back.

Anna had only known his mom in her last few years, but when mom was young she taught flexibility, yoga and judo.

He enjoyed instructing people just like mom did.

**

Anna sat to the side of his throne as he accepted visitors at court.

4 members of the militia had become his royal advisers.

“We have a problem out west. There’s something unclean out there.”

**

The alliance grouped all Opening+ cultivators in the same bunch, so some 80 cultivators from the beginning of elementalism to the Eternal realm

Hundreds of shimmering tier cultivators, most of them Sword and Bow wielders and thousands of iron fist joined the battle.

Lucille quipped, “this is one time talking won’t help.”

Hours later, Lucille controlled a line of skeletal monstrosities shouting, “rest awakened one’s. You deserve rest. Seek it!”

The monsters stumbled, some turn back and some collapsed.

Anna fought one terrifying monster after another. Three lichs, a skeletal dragon, a porcupine like giant undead monster.

It was odd to see two swords and no water from her sister.

She stabbed a howler wolf with a dagger from her fan and smashed the fan into the next one.

There was something odd with her fan, she continued fighting anyway, and what was left to fight dwindled rapidly.

**

Daimon organized a large feast for all the participants who hunted undead.

He toasted his mother and aunt for their contributions.

Aunt Lucille had a shocking announcement.

Emily was a fan-spirit. Few had heard of fan cultivation in this parts and knew its deepest ways like his aunt.

Emily was dressed impeccably looking almost like a very young Lucille. That’s what mom said at least.

He met many of the cultivators that night, one of the most memorable was a young shimmering Saber cultivator.

“Thank you for your service,” he had said to her.

“Your highness, thank you, our home grows safer with these solutions.”

“Cultivator Murray, how goes your saber training?”

“Well, you’re highness, there’s not a lot of saber masters here, I’ve mostly taught myself. It just seems like the right art for me.”

Danae Murray didn’t expect the Emperor to respond by starting an informal dueling ring for shimmering stage cultivators.

She was quite good amongst the early shimmering group, defeating the Emperor once and a couple other rising stars that had transferred from the militia to the new empire volunteers.

After the spars settled down the group chatted over cocktails and Lucille’s famous crazy bread.

“The saber is traditionally a counter-attacking weapon, quite good against sword users but not as good when you need a relentless will to charge into danger.”

“I believe Lucille’s son was a saber user. I guess he’d be my cousin but he left the family and joined the main branch of his father’s family, so no one’s seen him in years.”

“It’s crazy to think your mom’s spent hundreds of years of training and real battles. What’s the Eternal realm like?”

Nathan, another member of the group responded first. “Grand Elder Tim said he couldn’t spar with First Elder Anna. We’ve heard of Divine stage and Crystalline stage cultivators before your elders arrived, but no one has ever heard of the Eternal realm.”

Daimon responded, “Mom’s sword spirits were destroyed the day I was born. When the guilders attacked the palace. But in Eternal realm, her first sword spirit returned to her, and they are able to bring the sword back into existence when she fights. The sword my father gave her is now inhabited by his spirit, shucking is even stranger since he was a person not a weapon spirit.”

“So you never knew your dad, that’s sad,” Danae asked.

“Never. But we can move on to lighter topics.”

Later, Daimon stood on the balcony with Danae and a few members of his staff as the sun went down.

“Does your family live in town?” He asked.

“My family just wanted to stay safe. I took a chance to join the training your mother and uncle ran. They are in Osiren. At least the Guilders are finally gone from the region.”

“Yes finally. If Tim becomes Eternal realm also we will be more than prepared to respond if they come back.”

“Let’s hope so. I hope to learn from your aunts example too. Her path is rare in this region but she has progressed well.”

“Commanding the undead to change their ways , if that is not astonishing power I don’t know what is.”

“I think some of the early shimmering group were going to meet at East City Dojo next week, if you want to come,” Danae asked.

“As long as we don’t have surprise visitors I’d love to go.”

***

Anna established her bedroom and training in the west wing of the newly expanded palace built for her son.

Many martial artists and cultivators had settled near the original town Emperor Veers had granted to her son. The ton was becoming a city, as merchants saw an opportunity and many farmers and laborers sought protection under the Nascent empire’s wings.

Often alliance business was discussed in their capital as well.

She was concerned, when she discovered that the power of the Divine source within Daimon was growing stronger. If it reached full power, someone would make a connection and she wasn’t sure if Daimon could endure the steady state of power flow. Their empire was still small though it had grown in loyal followers.

She suspected that cultivation was more difficult for her husband and now her son as they more fully accepted the divine source. But Daimon Jr had always had control of the source which was beyond his father’s control.

**

The sense of power was unmistakeable. Lucille’s quarters were close to Daimon’s bedroom and morning room, as she was serving as chief of staff for him.

She ran over to see Daimon looking surprised. “Aunt Lucille?”

“I just suddenly recognized your power boost. Are you ok?”

“I didn’t even realize. It must be like what father dealt with. I don’t feel drained anymore? But I haven’t paid much attention to that power source in a long time. If it becomes a problem will you help me work through it?”

“Of course.”

Redounding Faith

Casting off her fan techniques, Lucille took a page from Anna’s book and traveled around as Lucas, the traveling cultivator-swordsman. She was reforming her sword strikes but the influence of two lifetimes of fan use were still visible in her style.

“You are a very elegant fighter, Lucas, where did you train?”

They sparred. But the man had learned a new level beyond Opening / elemental sword that was not Divine sword.

“My sister taught me. She was a rare female sword cultivator.”

“A she-sworder. Brilliant.”

“I suppose you could call it that.”

The wandering life wasn’t for Lucas though, and she joined mark’s community of sword cultivators.

Every week they would have bouts for Shadow sword, shimmering, and elemental and “crystallized cultivators.”

Lucas was tough to categorize so she fought up into crystal and down with the Opening group.

She was sure Anna would be in the former group soon enough.

-

The effects of electrical resistance were interesting. Tim could cause blackouts, but also neutralize other powers with the crsystslized lightning.

Spars were more like search and scout expeditions, as he worked through Anna’s ice.

She could fly again, utilizing temperature gradients and Tim expected he could do the same with electrical manipulation.

-

Daimon watched as the training center was being built, mom and dad would be the Chief instructors but the Emperor was paying for the center’s construction.

He didn’t understand why some nations like his birth nation, had access to divine power, and some did not, but he was determined to help out as he could, and he knew mom and Tim were both committed to developing the new cultivation theory of Crystalline cultivation.

Veer was busy with his father, so it was a quiet afternoon.

-

Lucille blocked the undead’s poison attack with her fan, cutting it in two with her sword.

The undead were largely immune to her elemental power, so she was forced to hold off the increasing force of undead attacks.

The commission army was mostly junior cultivators who had already withdrew, leaving Lucille and a few seniors to support the local seniors.

**

Undead one day, hostile sects, clans and empires next. Lucille fought many types of foes as the 2nd strongest of their warband.

When her group broke up in a coastal city she decided to take things very carefully. Many men were attracted to her by the nature of her cultivation but that meant nothing about who they were, what their inner heart was.

She returned to being a woman and searched out the way of Grace into the greatest beyond of the Crystalline stage.

The dao of shattered hearts identified the inner heart-life of nearly every cultivator she met in the city.

She returned to the societies of Yachists, but she was very reserved wielding words as she did sword and fan. She gave wisdom freely and pursued sailing and the social art seriously.

Maybe it was her past history or maybe some action by the guilders, but when a large force attacked the regatta Lucille lead the few cultivators in the regatta.

It was a desperate battle ending on the old warship that protected the yachists.

She suspected the last two foes she fought were just barely into the Crystal realm. Holding her ground she fought the spear cultivator with her sword while swaying the katana cultivator with her words. In the end it was words that were decisive as the Katana user attack her former ally, and the two quickly defeated the spearman.

The katana user was free to go. With most of the yachts sunk, Lucille moved back on land, returning to the coastal city she had been at before.

That fall Anna was shocked to discover a massive Guild army forming in the wider region, it was 2 empires away, in the Khanate.

AP: there’s a major guilder operation in the area, from home. They are east about 500 miles, north 80 miles from my position.

LO: I’ll keep that in mind.

Anna expanded her training center. The Emperor sent his best mortal soldiers in hope of entering shadows cultivation.

And neighboring her increasingly large training center was another center lead by a master archer. Marcus Saraiden was the emperors hope for increasing his army’s ranged firepower.

Anna struggled to find Lieutenants to train the soldiers, and Tim stayed very busy training the more experienced cultivators.

Drawing on Lucille’s experiences, she was a detective finding leadership potential in sometimes unlikely sources.

The big surprise was a neighboring smaller kingdom, that signed an alliance with the emperor in hopes of joining in the training and eventual fighting.

The guilders had already killed off two kingdoms in the east and they were not stopping.

***

“There are many places that need your skills more than us.” The leader of the yachists said she was overqualified as a protector.

I’ll show you overqualified. Anna had been overlooked many times during her early days. She drew on Anna’s experiences and wore a disguise joining the army in the same empire her sister was residing in.

It was quite curious then when she was highlighted as a potential recruit and sent to Anna’s training center.

She was in a training group with one of the new leaders Anna had found. She could tell when Anna was drawing on her experience as well.

“Close your eyes and try to see inside yourself. Your new nature starts when you see little afterimages on the outside, but on the inside a new well-spring of mighty waters emerges.”

When Lucille examined her spirit, it was a garden of Alluring and exotic beautiful flowers.

“What if I see something other than waters.”

“I’m not sure, I’ll have to ask our top trainer.”

The disguise worked as later that day Tim had invited her into his office.

“It’s unusual for an awakening cultivator to see a strongly specific element, yet someone not yet awakened has done so. I’m going to use an unusual technique to uncover this mystery. “

What was this technique, Lucille wondered. She was nervous she would be exposed.

“It’s ok, anything I find will be our secret.”

With a gentle touch of her forward, Tim concentrated.

“I haven’t seen anyone with a flower elemental root since I left my homeland. Yours is very distinct. I would guide you away from the sword except several thorns are sword shape. There’s a distinct sword influence here. I recommend you spend the next few weeks trying to unleash your power.”

To avoid giving Tim too many clues, she spend two weeks focusing on refining the trinity of sword, fan and word. She had kept the first battle fan she ever used, and restoring it from her storage ring she practiced with the sword she had been given and that old fan.

With each strike barbed afterimages followed the blade and floral motes suffused the air around her.

AP: I won’t spoil the surprise for Tim.

AP: PS. I like the new look.

Tim was surprised at how powerful she was, and he called her out. “You were an exile. Or the daughter of one.”

“Daughter, I was trained in the fan before and after we fled.”

“The Commandant’s sister was an unparalleled master of fan cultivation, with a similar elemental affinity. Maybe the commandment could give a few pointers.”

When she met Anna in disguise she had to use her words to prevent Tim from identify her by their similarities.

“My mother went to the Rosewood Primer. The sect didn’t survive the war of sects so we fled looking for a new life. We didn’t recognize the guild when they came. The idea that our homeland had become irreconcilable and different. Mother was killed as the guild purged anyone like the rebels. Besides the Prince and his mother, Aunt Lucille was now being hunted down also. Anyone relAted to or supporting the prince was hunted and now they killed anyone who looked similar, which included my mom.”

Anna was drawing on her own power to demonstrate to her how to fight with fans. But Anna’s nature lacked the extreme grace to pull off Lucille’s fighting style,

It became a game as Lucille borrowed Anna’s power in turn. And they sparred. She couldn’t capture Anna’s essence and Anna couldn’t capture hers but it was therapeutic.

“You are Lucille!”Tim said.

“I’m so sorry. I really let our guild become more important than what was happening to my family.”

“I’m still dealing with frustration, that everything I had was ripped away. But I do forgive you. I let the Empire become more important for me too.”

“Aunt Lucille is here. All I remember about her is mom was really upset about her. Auntie was on the side against my father. I don’t get why. Tim was too but he changed sides and helped.”

Veer shrugged.

They battled with training swords and tried imitating what they had seen, but it all ended when shadows came out of Daimon’s sword. That would be the end of Daimon’s practice with Veer and the beginning of serious training with Tim and his mom.

**

They added Daimon to the beginning cultivator swordsman training. He didn’t have the lifetime of experience that many of the swordsmen did but he did grow up watching her and Tim practice.

Daimon’s shadows were empowered by that mysterious source of Divine cultivation, and while he was in the middle of the pack at the moment he was getting stronger quickly.

Anna developed training cohorts and had practice battles between them. Each cohort had soldiers and cultivators at every level. For the very largest, she and Tim and Lucille would take turns as the mountain top of these cohorts.

“Can I fight in the battle coming up?” He asked one day.

“Let’s arrange things so you aren’t just in the main bulk of the army. There’s a new captain in the militia that’s stood out in my mind.”

**

Training focused on advancing veteran soldiers into the world of cultivation was paused, and the forces went in three directions. Those from the main army returned to Veer’s dad’s army. Those from out of town who chol to leave left, and those who volunteered became  effectively a militia lead by Anna.

They had 820 mortal soldiers, most felt they had a hope of reaching that prize of cultivation in battle. There were 300 Shadow cultivators, 15 Iron level cultivators and 2 Shimmering Sword cultivators. The guilders would have much more forces, but the advance of thf local Emperor’s forces was considerable.

There were also other nearby forces that had trained with her and the guilders might divide their forces and not send everyone to take over the Empire. Even the archery training center had another 400 in their own militia.

Captain Davis took in Daimon and other trainees who had never truly been in battle, he would ensure they participated but he and his four lieutenants would pull back when the pressure was too much.

Anna looked as Daimon came out of his bedroom dressed as just another soldier. Anna was fine with the outfit, everything except the flask of booze a soldier had given him.

“You don’t need this. It can relax mortal soldiers but it will just blunt your abilities.”

“Mom are you nervous?”

“I’m worried one of us won’t make it. Tim and I, my sister and you and Veer.  The guilders won’t hesitate to kill any Prince they find. Will you try hard to pretend you’re just a soldier. If the battle goes bad, Captain Davis will retreat to join us for the last stand, then you can let your power flow through. I don’t know what a Divine Crystalline cultivator will be like, but I’m willing to find out if it goes badly.”

*

Two guilds had arrived on the outskirts of the empire. The Guild of Hammer and Axe, and the guild of Flight and Arrows.

Anna met the Emperor as did Master Archer Hans.

“We have to focus whatever archers we have on Flight and Arrows. Hans, join our ranged strike team. Anna be ready to join our battle line. We would appreciate your sister and friend to join battle when the Senior guilders join battle.”

“Of course, it’s our home now too. This same group forced us to flee before. We won’t let you down.”

*

The guilders came into the Empire with a plan to quickly destroy this empire, like all the others.

The flight guild brought their rapid flight-team straight to the Emperor’s palace.

The team of 17 was met by 16, Commander Jerrin thought this would be easy. He rushed to fight what seemed to be the strongest man on their team.

When the she-sworder Jerrin’s assistant was fight lost immediately, he tried to run, but his opponent weighed him down with heavy Earth power. The last thing he saw was his whole strike team being crushed in a few moments.

*

Emperor Veer watched as his marshal adjusted the war map. He decided to engage the scattered Flight and Arrow forces who were troubling his people’s farms and villages. Each squad of archers were escorted by a squad of his army and a mid-tier cultivator.

Anna and her team waited to intervene where the guilds added more forces.

His son was worried because his friend was in one of the army squads being sent out.

With forces scattered all over the place, the Axe and Hammer charged straight for his palace.

Crystalline stage cultivators however could travel pretty fast, and he’d kept the majority of his army back.

*

Anna, Tim and Lucille had to return to defend against the Axe and Hammer’s advance.

They dedicated one of the best militia members to join Daimon’s team fighting in an orchard.

It only took an hour to get back to the palace by air, but the imperial army was fighting in retreat.

She was grief-sick for Aida and her first sword, but she crushed multiple attackers at a time with her sword ice, and deflected flying axes and hammers with walls of sword chroma.

Shattered shards of frozen electricity blasted other armies, and Lucille fought and talked equally, killing and persuading in the same moment. A dozen men had already turned on their guilder fellows.

“Face us, betrayers.”

Three elemental axe users, lead by a Divinely favored hammerer challenged them from the sky.

“I have the False divine,” Anna shouted.

**

Nathan fought ferociously alongside Daimon. Their unit was facing more and more resistance, after clearing away the first group trying the pillage the orchards south west of the capital. Half of their sworders had been injured or dead, and two thirds of the archers.

“Our overwatch was pulled away to resist an attack in the capital. The hammer and axe have showed up.

The fighting was mom would call intensive and desperate, and Daimon finally gave in and began releasing his father’s power. First he empowered Nathan but then the last line of battle he empowered seven of them.

Nathan break through into Elemental sword and began to slash a way of retreat for them. The seven covered him as he rushed to follow Nathan.

With the Earth element, Nathan intuitively grasped how to slow down the attackers who had turned and pursued them.

*

The Divine earth hammer broke through her defenses again and she had to get up, fly up and resist.

For all Crysrslline Cultivation promised another way, at her stage it didn’t compete with Divine favor.

But at last, she got up one more time, with the intention of attack not resistance.

The water sword concentrated as she pushed all her effort and power into crushing the mountainous hammer and the wielding behind her.

She was dazed but she had blasted through his hammer, and inside the range of his distance technique she offered up a trace of blows.

She struck three times but she was horrifically wounded and she spun awkwardly, smashed into the palace wall.

The next moment, Tim was there, electricity writhing to meet the Divine blow. Hammer and the axe of Tim’s opponent struck and Lucille appeared, saving them for a moment with a misdirection of her fan.

A momentary pause and then the Hammer and two axes struck. Anna interposed her sword with the hammer, as last gesture to her friends.

The hammer was deflected. Not wasting time she countered as her friends fought off the Axes up close.

Attacking, she realized the man had lost his divine power, they had a partial divine source still.

She disrupted his attacks and overwhelmed him and their previous leader was slain. She saved Tim and Lucille as they had saved her.

The battle was a rout after that as the guild fled when their leaders died.

She had to rest, but she didn’t dare leave Daimon without help, so she and the others rushed to his help,

Nathan and Daimon and his team were surrounded on three sides but Nathan was using Earth elemental attacks, his sword struck with an intense weight.  There were 6 other fighters who lead the defense.

Anna had a thought and landed joining the fight. She didn’t unleash all of her power but instead relied on her centuries of experience and working together they pushed back the enemy.

Another regiment of the army thought they were an east target, and Anna stepped up her fighting operating in the shimmering realm. Lucille and Tim fought a leader of the scattered Flight guild, while she drew in one of their lieutenant’s and suddenly reacted with her full power, crushing the man.

Leading Daimon’s unit back to the capital Anna and crew defeated 3 waves of flying foes before the enemy gave up.

Daimon would have to stay back at the palace if any other wave attacked. The enemy had surely noticed his abilities.
