Empress and Guild

It was almost like the days of their childhood, Anna was always up first. She didn’t think child Anna could float three swords before breakfast.

They sparred three times since Anna got here, even holding back, Anna trounced her.

“My last sparring partner constantly defeated me far more easily and he was still early Divine. There’s a lot of space for growth. Oddly, collecting swords that can handle the power level is part of my cultivation.”

In combat, Her style was defensive with the flowers of her element forming a shield, but she suspected greater powers in social settings.

Anna sparred with Tim too, moving down to using a single sword.

After breakfast, Lucille would go into the office to look after Senior cultivators support. And at night she was out at parties and social events. It had always refueled her cultivation to go socialize, since the blossom sect.

Anna was quieter, she interacted with some of the others at the Grandmaster center, the exclusive ring of buildings only available to the highest ranking cultivators. Opening cultivation was mostly the minimum standard.

Lucille was responsible for the center, and she checked in and noticed Anna there one morning.

Lisa was a mid-Opening Saber cultivator who frequented the center often.

Anna had been inconspicuous, drinking tea at a back table in the lounge.

“I’m just saying,” Lisa said to Devin, a brand new grandmaster, “you don’t have to genuflect at the altar of the emperor, he’s a kid. It’s not like he’s personally saved the day. There are many centuries old cultivators who put themselves on the line. We should have a group of elders running things.”

The two sat at a table next to Anna.

I was about to go check on another building but I waited, looking to my subordinate who ran the lounge. I went behind the bar.

“I don’t genuflect, I just respect that someone’s gotta run things at the top. I’m sure it’s not easy and I know there’s a whole family around him keeping him accountable.”

“Bunch of toadies. Look, um hey newcomer I’ve seen you for a few weeks. Do you think the Emperor has anyone on his staff with a spine, or are they all just twisted on his finger.”

Devin interrupted, “Lisa,”

Anna set her teacup down. She opened her mouth, but nothing came out.

When had Anna ever been angry?

After a pause, she said, “His instructors are quite hard-charging. He’s not a kid anymore.”

“Unmarried, under 50. That’s a kid to me. What kind of responsibility does he have.”

“Lisa stop,” Devin said.

Lucille felt Anna’s divine power almost expressed.

By an inhuman act of will, Anna simply said, “I agree with Devin. Im going to go to the sparring club.”

Devin looked at Lisa and rushed after Anna.

I discretely followed, as Lisa shrugged and headed for the sparring club. It wasn’t rated for Anna’s power level. That would require a lot more work and the suitable staff to do such things were unavailable.

LO: don’t go full out, the Club can’t handle that.

AO: I can’t think straight. Who is this Lisa.

LO: mouthy, more off-color than I expected. We will review back at the office our policies.

I returned to my duties. Anna wouldn’t do anything rash, it wasn’t her nature.

**

No one seemed to pay attention to the history of the sect that became Faithful Sword and Fan Guild.

She was discrete about it, but one of the founders was sitting right with them. It wasn’t exactly clear but she knew the co-founder worked for the Empire directly. When the sect had been given Silver seal status Anna left it.

Lisa’s odd outburst made him uncomfortable. The kind of tingly discomfort any cultivator dreads. For the first time since he’d been at the center, Anna went to the sparring club.

Making a sufficiently warded ring was expensive so there was only two rings and often a waiting list to spar.

Nice chairs were placed in a semi-circle around each ring, with its rare protective artifacts.

Anna was watching as two guys fought. Devin would say they were mid-tier for the grandmaster center crowd.

At this level it wasn’t clear what anyone’s full power level was. It wasn’t a sparring ring for all out Elemental spars. The two men were Fire vs Water but they only expressed their elements a little.

He sat down at a chair next to Anna. Nervous yes, but she seemed a bundle of nerves to.

“Hi I’m Devin.”

“Picked up on that. I’m Anna. Here as a visitor for a few months.”

“Oh good. I’m sure the guild likes to see more visiting experts coming through. I’m just an early Water Sword cultivator, I just brought through and passed the grandmaster cert last month.”

He heard Lisa talking in the back somewhere. Just saying hi to someone.

“I’m also water sword.”

The weapon she drew out was impressive. It was a longsword, but made to an impeccable standard. It had an engraving on the pommel but he couldn’t tell what.

“I—haven’t seen a sword spirit waken up yet.”

“You will. How does signing up for a spar here, work anyway?”

“Write your name on the list of challengers. Looks like there’s only one before you.”

He gulped when the woman’s sword wrote out her name like a pen.

“Just your first name.”

She stopped at the O in her last and shrugged. The sword lazily floated back to her.

That was cool, he had to admit.

“It’s good practice for fine sword control,” she said.

The two mid-listers were done. The one who stepped down looked at the list and called out, “Stier, you got next.”

The man was a very physical Sword cultivator, only lower-mid tier, he should have been a body cultivator, Devin thought.

In a few minutes the previous champions Fire based attacks showed him out. Brute strength was meaningless at this level.

“Just remember Devin, whether you are junior or senior depends on the setting. Don’t let it get to your head, and the group I often frequent, I’m heavily outclassed.”

“Anna O? Up to get overwhelmed?” Said the brute who had lost.

With the weird comment out of the way, Anna stepped into the ring with her sword.

With a clean consistent approach, Anna batted away her opponents Sword, water meeting fire with more than enough strength. She had seen an opening Devin didn’t even notice, and in an instant downed her opponent.

“Rematch later,” said the Fire sworder. “Whose next against this new girl?”

“They beat you,” Lisa asked, coming into view. “Not worth my time yet, Gina, show her woman power.”

“Whatever,” Gina, the super-fast Lightning sworder said.

Devin looked back at Anna. Again her Sword was floating, but when Gina approached it was held.

Gina’s speed and intent made her an upper mid presence in the group. The top dogs weren’t even here.

The Lead executive of all Sword cultivation at the guild was the undisputed #1, although they had the manager of the center Lucille, but she never sparred here.

Anna dealt with Gina’s speed, strikin hard with a sword blow that slammed Gina into the side of the ring six feet up.”

Lisa was the ringleader of challengers. “Mark.”

Earth sworder, don’t want to parry his blades. Anna took a strike, deflected and returned it and its wielder to the ground.

More people were trickling in. “You’ve got some skill, after Nico I’ll battle you myself.”

Anna hadn’t had a break, it was tough to keep going, one opponent after another, but Nico didn’t last long in the ring.

“Alright, I’m coming down!” Lisa said.

For once, Anna spoke more than a word. “Good. You probably don’t even realize you did it, but you dishonored my fiancée. You made awful accusations and  —“

Lisa tried to interrupt Anna by attacking, but in a single moment water filled the ring, and the water of many tons pressed on Lisa, but did not drown her.

Devin was shocked by the control of water.

“I came here, on vacation, as my future husband and I separate for three months before coming together forever. Now let’s spar.”

She withdrew the intense water pressure and let Lisa get back up.

For a moment, the spar had begun, then a second sword appeared from nowhere, while the first continued its strike.

Lisa was down. She coughed out blood?? Had the ring’s defenses failed.

One of the many people around said. “She actually pulled back on her strike at the last moment. Why didn’t we hear about this Divine Sword in our midst.”

Anna made both swords disappear and in a trail of water flashed out of there.

Lisa stood up, shook it off, looking befuddled. “Who is her future husband.”

*

She flew high into the sky, leaving behind the guild grounds. She needed some ancient demon to thoroughly destroy, or something, and she missed Daimon.

She landed many miles away, her instinct leader her wandering.

*

Causing offense was impossible to avoid completely. Offending the powerful was foolish. There was no specific law against defaming the emperor, the will of the Emperor would respond.

Thinking about it. Anna was partly the Will of the Emperor.

Despite all this, they still held a conclave regarding Anna and Lisa’s dispute.

Anna returned having found and slain some awful demonic infestation. She was no longer Anna, the innocent person on vacation. She was Empress-in-waiting Anna and her dress matched that.

Lisa came as a pauper, dressed almost in rags, by comparison.

Vice President Laurie of tribunals lead the effort. The other executives were panel members.

“I’m recusing myself because of the conflict of interest.”

“Noted.”

“We will have Senior cultivator Gran present her story, and then Guest cultivator Ohnani, followed by questions from the panel. Prepare the artifact.”

Two assistants of tribunals brought the device in. Taking caution, they activated whatever powers it held.

“Gran?”

Lisa stood up, “Members of the panel, I was struck by an attack that overwhelmed the wards of the sparring ring. I was completely unaware that my sparring partner was a Divine Level cultivator. I was unaware that the Consort of our Emperor was at the guild or at the Grandmaster center. No announcements were made by the guild or by Consort Ohnani herself. She was not presenting herself as a powerful figure but as a humble one.

I took Consort Ohnani as a junior and I didn’t think about casually asking her questions. We talk about all kinds of things in a jokey uhh low danger way. I was not trying to make a serious thing of this. Just as sometimes we all have an important conversation about how a friend needs to get help, but we would never say anything if their spouse was present, I would never have said anything about the Emperor if I knew Consort Ohnani was present.

I committed a Faux Pas, but did I deserve to be attacked for that? I think it was inappropriate for Consort Ohnani to hide her identity and unethical for her to attack me. Charge her with assaulting a grandmaster of the Guild. As a non-guild member the penalty for that is significant. I don’t feel comfortable attending the grandmaster center, and remember actions speak louder than words.”

I looked at Anna, she was unperturbed.

“Ohnani?”

Lisa took her seat, as Anna stood up. “I would have the Guild panel remember that I was one of the cofounders of the Sect, which became this guild. During the Sect wars, I lead the Graceful Sword and Fan sect into battle in the Imperial city, defending the Emperors home. I did this with the support of Vice Executive Lucille my sister, as well as Vice Executive Tim. I was very close with his mother, and I consider him like a son.

The definition of the Sectarian movement that we fought against was a movement seeking the freedom of sects to operate however they wish, independent of Imperial authority. As members of a Guild, you swore to uphold the Empire. I made that oath to our Emperor when I became a Consort of His Imperial Highness.

I am in the three month period, between the promise and marriage. I will no longer be his consort but become his bride.

I didn’t want to make waves when I arrived here. The guild is growing, and I was not received as anyone of significance here, in fact I was ordered to leave the administration building by the receptionist.

I just wanted to rest and enjoy my last three months in quiet. I enjoyed the Grandmaster center’s hospitality which was extended as a privilege to me.

When Senior Cultivator Gran talked with, I’m not sure of his last name, Devin was his given name. I let it play out at first. Then Senior Cultivator Gran wanted to know my opinion on whether anyone on the Emperor’s staff had a spine, I know several very good people on the Emperor’s staff.

Gran spoke as to defame the Emperor himself, and the staff, questioning whether the Emperor had anyone who would stand up to Him and ask tough questions.

I was unable to say anything at first. But I defended the staff and told Gran that the Emperor was not a child. Gran said since he was under 50 and unmarried he was a child.

He bears a very heavy responsibility that he takes very seriously. Lastly, Gran said that he didn’t have any responsibility.

I was furious, I like to imagine that all of you would be furious if someone talked to your fiancée like that behind there back.

The Guild system was instituted by our Emperor to keep Guilds tied more closely to the Empire and it’s army.

I held my anger by going to the sparring club, where Gran showed up as well. I didn’t not go overboard with the other battles, but I felt that it was right to explain my side in the ring, that I was defending the empire and emperor.

Although I did withdraw the great majority of my strike’s power, I deflected Gran’s attack with one sword and used some of my divine power to strike her.

I used divine waters before that to prevent Gran from attacking until I could tell my story.

In addition to Consort, I am one of four sworn to protect and seek the enemies of the Emperor and Empire. If I struck Gran down dead it would have been my right, subject only to His approval or disapproval and not this panels.

If you sentence me to expulsion from the Guild, I will never set foot in the Guild’s territory again. If you sentence me according to the standard For non-guild member assaulting a grandmaster: Swift execution, I will resist and ask you to find what authority you can over the Emperor’s own.

I defended the respect and esteem of the Emperor. If everyone spoke of our Emperor with such disdain as Gran does, I don’t know if we would have an Empire.

Judge as you see fit, but I believe Senior Gran’s words are a violation of the Guild oaths in mere speaking. Thank you.”

The room was silent with the depth of stunned.

The Vice President of Tribunals spoke, “Regarding the matter of the session only, do any of our panel members  have any questions?”

“Senior Cultivator Gran. On the question of the Guild oath, do you agree or disagree with the statement of duty to the Empire?”

“I completely agree of course. I will faithfully defend the Empire first, not placing sect or guild before my duty, but I regarding my time in the guild as a service to better defend our imperial land.”

The VP - Tribunals spoke, “Guest cultivator Ohnani. Did you know what level the Sparring ring’s systems would fail at?”

“I didn’t.”

No more questions were raised. “Senior Cultivator Gran, Guest Cultivator Ohnani, you are dismissed.”

**

Anna left Lucille’s house the next day. “It’s best if I’m not on guild property. I don’t know what this guild is, it doesn’t feel like what we founded anymore.”

“It’s a big organization now, it’s left our control , but still I see the signs of our influence Anna.”

Returning to the army barracks with her staff, she only had three weeks left, and she liked the Major’s attitude over the guild’s.

**

“Regarding the Judgment as it pertains to Guest Cultivator Ohnani. She is hereby barred from all guild property and enjoined against leading Guild forces as would normally be here right. She is asked to reimburse the Guild for damages to the sparring ring. She will be escorted out of the Guild after this hearing.”

“Regarding the Judgement as it pertains to Senior Cultivator Gran. She is stripped of the rank of Grandmaster, and unable to retry the exam for ten years.”

Anna didn’t let them escort her off Guild premises, she took flight instead.

*

LO: the guild is not as bad as you think. Just set in their administrative procedures.

AO: we always worried about growing too fast. I guess it was bound to happen. If you ever don’t want to follow their lead, I’m sure we use you.

*

Daimon reviewed his advisors notes, trying to understand the current situation. The shift away from defending against enemies internally to once more watching their own borders was ongoing.

His future wife’s emotions were more out of control than he was used to. She was usually somewhere between placid and determined. The link between the Divine Level cultivator, through the Gift of Divinity and back into him greatly enhanced his cultivation and strength, and usually buoyed his mood and stabilized him. She had felt offense, anger, disgust and weariness, followed by finally more subtle emotions.

The guilds were well established and able to handle the internal business of rooting out further Sect discontent. But they were large organizations, already hard to deal with, with their own momentum.

He made the decision to recruit cultivators more heavily directly into the army.

He would talk to Anna about this, after the wedding. So it was time to work on the final preparations.

**

Her inability to talk to Daimon about her experience at the guild was frustrating. She spent those last few weeks between meditation to calm herself, and preparations for the wedding. On her own guest list, there was only Anna and Tim. Daimon invited all the new guild presidents as well. Even with Daimon’s fairly long list, the wedding was considered subdued.

Since she was already consort, the wedding celebrations started at sundown at the Consort Quarters. Using poles, young ladies carried a sedan chair while others carried torches.

Carried high into the air on the sedan, the ladies lead a procession through the middle door, the Emperor door, into the palace.

There Daimon stood, with his closest family. She didn’t know either of Daimon’s aunts very well despite living near them for years.

The officiant stood between the two groups. Anna Ohnani, we have gone to great lengths to find something that belonged to your ancestors. This was, we believe, your father’s family heirloom. The sword that was denied to you before will be remade in marriage into a visible sign of the Ohnani family joining with the Imperial house. The grey owl will roost in the nests of the pelican. May this sword mark the promise of our house’s future offspring.

Sword Maiden, take up your father’s sword and begin to walk with His magnificent imperial highness.”

Anna took the sword, surprised that her father had wielded it. She never knew her parents, as far as her uncle said, they both ascended soon after the twins were born.

She carried the sword in her arms, as if she was constantly ready to present it to her Lord and Love.

“Your highness, you are lovely today.”

He was dressed in white, the purity of its color reflected her heart towards him. Gold in his cuff links, the crown resting gently on his head in silver with garnets and rubies upon it.

She, dressed in pure red silks, a necklace of gold chain, with an amulet of white gold with a sapphire of considerable size set in it. Hair adornments with a crafted metal in the shape of a pelican were in three places as her brownish hair was tied in a tight bun.

“You are glowing my love,” he said.

Into the hours of the night, the account of the imperial family was given. Daimon’s ancestors were spoken of, as a reminder of all that Anna should take into her heart, remember and defend.

Just before dawn they shared a private breakfast together while the rest of the staff and party ate separately.

“It’s not appropriate for this occasion but I will tell you later of some of my time away from here. It was a concerning experience.”

“I felt the anger personally. But today let’s just put all the weights away.”

After the quiet breakfast, guests began to arrive for the public ceremony. The Royal chapel was unsealed for the first time in hundreds of years.

Changing clothes into a gown of purple, Anna waited in the bride’s waiting room while her maids made little touch ups to her appearance,

Finally, to the playing of traditional instruments, Anna took the sword of her family, and Tim accompanied her up to the chapel’s altar. The emperors throne was moved in and he was seated.

Tim stepped back and Anna curtsied into a low bow, placing the sword on the most beautiful case that was at Daimon’s feet.

Taking the flower petals Lucille had given her, she scattered them over the throne.

“Come sit beside me, take your proper place as your family is joined to the throne.”

The new throne, covered in jewels and draped in fine clothes was moved alongside Daimon’s.

She daintily sat down at the throne.

“Hail Empress Anna, Sword of her People, defender of her husband’s realm.”

*

It was a great feast after the coronation, Lucille thought. She rarely drank but toasts and celebrations went long into the night. She had to get back to guild business however.

There was so much to do at the masters and grandmaster facilities.

The emperor announced the first Grand Challenge in just three years between the Seven guilds. The President would expect first place for the most faithful guild.

*

Anna watched as the Emperors best smiths refined her family sword to be worthy of her cultivation. She would always take the sword of her husband’s gift first,  but the second and third swords would be her early one and this family heirloom.

*

In her new routine, Anna learned about the Empire’s resources and treasury system. How many payments came and went from various places. But she counted the days until a week had passed.

Daimon took her into his bedroom, and they made passionate love and kissing and the joys of afterwards as well, resting in his strong arms, in one moment swordswomen put away as she was fully his possession.

They took breakfast as usual but it was more intimate now, and from week to week, they spent what time they could in passion, serenity and bliss.

After a month, she finally told him about her experience at the guild, but she had moved on, enjoying her new place in his world.

There were only two of his defenders now, Arielle and herself. Anna was hopeful that the Divine power would manifest upon a new champion.

Aida remained her favorite spirit while her family’s sword did not yet produce any spirit yet she could still fight with 7 swords now.

She practiced sparring with Arielle but the difference in power between them was so vast. It would take time, decades and more of consistent practice and trial.

*

As the Empire lessened the budget given to the guilds, the Faithful sword and fan found ways to earn extra funds.

Tim managed the Sword artisans that satisfied the demand for so many swords. While access to the guild was free, the effective price was the price of a good sword.

Tim personally tried many swords and accepted or removed artisans from the official guild list based on their standard.

He also ran special events for the guild, with prizes of a particularly good sword for victory.

He watched as the executive in charge of fans made them into highly effective weapons, while the Fan social became its own sub universe. Everything a fan cultivator needed from fan to attire was sold by the guild.

At the Initiates level, guild members scrapped by to attract any training from even an apprentice. The flood of initiates was much larger than acolytes even.

Acolytes became an influential group as they showed off to initiates, but apprentices were tight-lipped working with their seniors in large groups as the ratio of apprentices to masters was so high.

With journeymen increasing, the guilds received acclaim for their people dealing with local crises in the region, but there was more helpers than help that needed doing and few made it back to the guild.

Journeyman status became graduation for most guild members, as they formed alumni associations.

The masters were overwhelmed with training dozens of apprentices, and somehow trying to develop their own skills still further.

Only the grandmasters, and those who went into the executive branch had any privilege.

Some spent a lot of time sparring, or time celebrating, but Tim was focused, between his official duties and training, he maintained an intense routine.

Lucille was increasingly consumed with the Organization’s work as well.

She took on the challenge of planning and preparations for the guild challenge in three years.

*

The new army cultivator program only had a few Senior cultivators to lead and inspire the troops. The generals of course could help but their focus was always on logistics and the questions of strategy and command.

Anna personally put in a lot of time to pass on some of her extensive battlefield experience and wisdom.

In the army, even the cultivators worked to maintain a culture of one unified army, and referred to each other by rank. Cultivators in the army began at the specialist rank and rose to specialist first class, staff special second grade, staff specialist first grade, brigade specialist, and general staff specialist.

Arielle became the first five star general staff specialist, while Anna was labeled as three star.

They didn’t have command authority except in emergencies but they had influence.

Daimon personally accompanied Anna to the army base on several occasions, and between discussions with the generals, he observed Anna training others, and directing scenarios that re-enacted certain battles,

Back at the Palace, Daimon returned to the balcony where Anna’s day of training might end.

It was a form of meditation, but she often ended the day by closing her eyes and leading the swords in great calligraphy. The sword spirit Aida would chatter comments.

In mid concentration, he could get lost in the spell of gently bubbling fresh waters, pools of water and rivers running down, he became a little gust of wind wishing across the waters, as his Qi merged with hers.

In an instant, he withdrew his staff from the cubby in the patio, and the winds multiplied, the waters tossed high into the suddenly imposing winds.

Forever the scent of fresh breezes was upon her.

But matters of the evening required they exit this would. Water and wind receded. Swords retreated into the hidden space.

Questions about children during the dinner with the Imperial family. The awkward question of whether a 250 year old cultivator was able to bear children at all.

And then, one evening, within the idyllic scene of water and wind came the smallest burst of lightning.

None of the imperial staff would know for weeks, but the two of them knew a third had entered their lives.

*

We walked, hand in hand down the length of the periphery.

His gentle hands were always there. I meditated each morning but otherwise left my sword practice behind.

I even went with him as he talked with the different offshoots and branches of the Imperial family, and dealt with their issues.

We had about half-Prefectures and half-Guilds as administrative units. Guilds had taken on more than just their core functions and also provided urban governance for their surrounding city.

While many farms were part of a prefecture , most processing was done in a guild town. Faithful sword and Fan had grown especially fast.

The question of how to deal with a traitorous guild and how to continue funding the most crucial operations of empire filled Daimon’s work day.

I didn’t know how much physical activity was safe for our baby so I took it easy for the first time.

I never imagined how a day could go by with nothing done, but these days were slowly going.

The Imperial physician and midwife both checked in on me weekly, though it was still very early on.

One evening, late after dinner I lay nestled in my love’s arms. And he said something important.

“Did you know Arielle had a child, after she became our Protector. I don’t know who she learned from but learn from her.

Our child may have a lot of responsibility placed on them even now, but you can’t carry that weight all the time. I have to talk with everyone on my staff, you can disagree with me. I hope that you’re pursuing the same goals and values, but I want your independent opinion.

I need your fiercely protective and vigilant spirit. If you let everyone know Arielle is advising you, they’ll know you’re being my safe with the Imperial child.

We’ll have to talk about how Princes and Princesses of the Imperial house are raised.”

()

“Guilds aren’t going to give up their potential Divine cultivators, and the army is still only a small organization of cultivators amid the mortal soldiers. I’m not sure where we will fill our third and fourth,” Arielle was saying.

When she was pregnant Arielle had a constant spiritual companionship with her child, she could figure out what needed to be done to keep her daughter safe.

“Intense combat was about the only thing that could harm the baby. I was able to still spar and even fight with low intensity. I was still in pain at the end.”

**

The first congress of Martial Guilds brought Guild leaders and their directors together.

Lucille was one of the senior cultivator directors, and so she gathered with others in charge of Senior cultivation.

They were - Sword and Fan, Saber, Archery and Nature, Staff, Spear and Shield, and Blade guilds.

As a proper representative, Lucille brought the Sword she had practiced with. She was not a Sword primary but she could draw on her sister’s vast sword expertise.

As directors of Senior cultivation, they shared the number of cultivators they had at Opening, and if possible Divine cultivation.

New laws were ratified, and all cultivators banned by one guild were banned congress wide and not allowed in any military call ups by the Emperor. Policy was set regarding acceptable excuses not to be called up, and logistical and administrative info sharing was established.

She was unable to protest then, three months later, when the Emperor asked for a small call up from the guilds to deal with a few still operating Sectist groups in neighboring small kingdoms, that the assembled representatives enacted the Congress agreement and refused to be lead by or even include her sister Anna in the army.

She told Anna that she would be way out voted on making an exception.

Everyone involved thought it was petty that Arielle refused to be involved at the point.

**

Daimon was stressed by the very Guild system he enacted immediately turning diffident and almost hostile.

All funding was cut to guilds, but they had their own systems. The Imperial army began to take on a bigger role in the coldness between emperors and guilds.

I reduced my stress by returning to regular combat practice. And staying out of the planning and awareness meetings. I just heard from Daimon at night.

Day by day he said things like: “Daggel road is filled with Guild exercises, they made no attempt to allow 3rd division to pass.”

Our baby was becoming a larger spiritual and physical presence, but nothing too bad as I carried them.

Taxes were being diverted to guilds, and logistics were harder as guilds hired away reliable people supplying the army.

I began to tour the imperials army as it became basically the 8th guild directly beholden the Emperor.

We had to arrange its own craftsmen, farmers, supplies of everything under the army banner.

The crest was redone under the two swords and saber  of Emperor, Arielle ‘s saber and my family crest sword. Not the exact design but suggestive.

Arielle’s peak Divine power let her see the Guild’s movements.

*

It was the last days of my pregnancy, and the Guilds intended to capitalize on that to take one of the two of us out of commission.

But, Daimon had risen to Manifestation, and because of his family bloodline already starting to call on the powers of Emperor Divine. Emperors as a rule never had time to cultivate to such a level.

But it was grim. Those who could spend six months on vacation in a nearby minor kingdom were sent among the family and staff. Arielle prepared for confrontation.

The Guilds would ask, with their members assembled, for the right to establish a government run by The Guild Congress, with the Emperor as only an influential person.

The army openly established a cordon blocking access to the palace.

Daimon was called away to meet the gathered as for once the birth pains took me back to mortality.

Should it be this bad? How do mortal women deal with this?

The room was only one wet nurse and doctor when our little boy was born

The Palace shook. Arielle was fighting. Her husband was fighting.

Soon the palace shook again, and this time I acted, as debris fell, I created a Pearl of water condensed and empowered and rushed from the room, seeking only for our son to live.

Rising into the middle of a great maelstrom of wills I saw 20 existences on my power level or greater, and Daimon standing within their semi-circle,

Daimon was chanting something. Arielle was fading. Reality began to fracture.

A mother and father utter wish faith that their daughter survived. Another mother and father, higher beings. Her parents.

Light. Dark. Kaboom.

War of the Sects

Lucille flew in formation at a shocking speed with the Graceful Sword and Fan and other Silver seal sects.

This super cultivator Arielle and the Gold seal sects were beyond. Anna and the regular and bronze sects were behind.

They must be flying hundreds of miles in just a few hours as the clouds streamed by above them, forest and the vast stretch of sea became desert and at last mountain. They landed in the foothills, with the mountains looming.

5 minutes separated each wave of sects, and Anna arrived with the Bronze and regular sects.

“We go in from the East, sects and imperial forces of the other 3 empires will be joining us from North south and west. Battle lines, Shimmering, follow closely by Manifestation cultivators, Opening cultivators on ground reserve. Divine cultivators in the skies ready to contest their Divines. Center shall be our Bronze and regular sects, Left wing will be Silver sects, right Gold sects. And the army will provide depth behind central. We have a narrow front, so keep your army in waves of three lines or more.”

Anna, Steven, Arielle and the sect divine cultivators rose into the air.

Tim ordered the GSF sect members and coordinated with Silver sects to find their place in the left flank.

It only took 25 minutes to get in formation, and on the General’s order they began to March on the tough ascending climb up to the mountain pass.

The enemy sect was huge. Towers and residences were found even outside the main gates. Gold seal sects diverted to remove any threats inside.

The army held the slowly increasing group of prisoners and quieting enchantments kept the prisoners from alerting anyone.

A devastating surge of lighting seemed to engulf the Eastern gate, and suddenly the gate fell, Lucille prepared her fan, speaking to the juniors in the next line and the charged in.

All they caught in the first charge was juniors doing calisthenics. The first line subdued them. The rangers took out their master.

The overrun continued, slowing in the face of increasing enemy response. The first line retreated as the second line of shimmering cultivators took charge.

Sword and rapier and ranges Fire filled all.

The shimmerings fell back, and the Manifestation cultivators took the stage in one line. The effort surged them forward, Her new Fan echo slay an enemy as they targeted a junior.

She was soon forced into the front line as the enemy responded.

Titanic clashes marked the divine combat overhead. Anna was covering a huge area with only the three Bronze seal divine cultivators and two regular sect divines.

The left flank was barely holding, the center being weakest. The center entirely fell; and then the gold sects furiously cut down enemies in the way to rejoining Lucille and the Left flank . They formed a strong core. And Anna descending to add strength on the ground. Finding Tim, they fought with incredible coordination.

“Like old times,” Tim said.

“Watch out!” Anna activated their rarely used sister swap power and Lucille appeared next to Tim who didn’t see where the enemy was.

Anna was zoning out, five swords and three spirits defending their position from overwhelming fire and attack.

Water engulfed them, it felt comfortable though it flowed with a gold sheen.

It was a shield of water. Sounds waves feelings and emotions washed over her.

She recognized the emotional attack, and relying on her strengths, wore calmness as she projected peace.

In a sudden clearing of the waters, they saw a devastated area, lightning and fire formed in swords and staves, and two other armies at Nortb and west hemming the enemy in.

Anna engulfed them in thicker water than ever, and forced the group to withdraw as powers beyond her fought in an assault on all senses. She protected the group.

After what seemed only a moment the war of Higher divine cultivators passed.

Arielle and another late Divine stage cultivator stood in the middle of the ruined compound. The four imperialist army’s pressed inward.

“That was some very good shielding under pressure. Water has an affinity for that.” Said Steven.

“Thank you, the fight grew beyond them in a hurry.”

**

The army worked tirelessly into the night, while sects rotated on and off of watch duty.

Anna spent hours in the sky, with Steven and with David. Lucille chatted with her sect members and other sect Senior executives.

Anna came back with a new sword on the third night.

She was ushered into a strategy meeting while Lucille and the other members of her sect were waiting at camp.

“They’re threatening to cut us up and leave us surrounded. We’re going to strike at several sects preemptively tonight before they can gather.”

“I thought it was just one sect we were fighting.”

“Local sects are mad that our empires banded together to destroy one evil sect. Now they think we will go after anyone else that offends us. But the Divine dragon sect was very much a problem to our sworn Allies. We are facing an all sect alliance in this region.”

“So what are we going to do?”

“I’m leading three sects, including Graceful Sword and Fan on a nighttime attack of a smaller sect. Many of the Divine cultivators here will be leading a team. Get a few hours of sleep and then join Soaring Arrow sect and Vigilant Saber Sect outside my tent.”

While she had commanded the sects during the initial assault the general was really in charge. Old sect operations had only been small group affairs. Now she would lead a sizable force on a daring assault, without any other backup.

She only had a few hours to sleep but actually fell asleep a half hour before wake time. She didn’t need sleep much anymore but after the long nights of scouting she wanted to.

Aida woke her up, and she gathered her three swords, stowing them, in sub space.

The sects were gathered. Soaring arrow and Vigilant saber were regular sects. Graceful Sword and Fan Was Silver seal of course .”

“Prepare for the flight formation.” She said.

She gathered Tim, and his second Ryan as well as her sister, she also gathered the top cultivators from the Arrow sect and Saber sect. Vigilant arrow would hold position with the bulk of the three sect forces, providing support Fire while that team of leaders dealt with the highest levels of Sect cultivators in one big burst.

“I will try 6 sword kata, now with my new sword, but I’ve not practiced it. Among our top group, fall back and provide primary support if I’m facing an enemy Divine cultivator. Command believed we could take this sect without over stressing me.

If Our top enemy is high Opening tier, we can make a combined attack against their entire leadership and give the rest of the sects room to finish the job.”

“Senior, what kind of sect are we facing? Geographically,” the head archer asked.

“Down in a near flatland valley. We should have good fire positions, but not much stealth. Water shield on approach to defend against long range Fire.”

The enemy sect kept guard positions, and Anna suspected the leaders were burning the night oil in their tents. She didn’t shield, after dropping most of the three sects in the support position. Instead the 10 of them landed. Tim and Ryan killed the watch men.

Anna knew the enemy sect master detected her presence. Simultaneously three spirits and six swords appeared to match the two staves of the enemy. He was barely into the Divine stage, but she took him seriously .

“Hold.”

The archer shot a fierce arrow at the man and he was upon her.

“Why are you doing this,” the man asked, as Anna fought like she did against her seniors, with maximum exertion and focus.

The two staves became one.

“You were  going to join other sects and surround us, when we only dealt with the supremely evil divine dragon sect.”

“We prepare our defense, against four emperors. Will you follow the Emperor against your own sect, in time.”

“My emperor, I am his consort, sworn to him from 15 years old. My home sect, if they turned so monstrous to need removal, I would plead with him to be allowed to end things.”

“Imperial fool.”

The divine spell was something new, I let Waters assault him and shield us. And the cursed fire was snuffed out as Aida swung the final blow.

“Now, find their next leadership. We can split up, I will provide overwatch.”

The main force began to advance after I signaled them, and groups of this top 9 battles their senior, the rest of the sect joining battle as the enemy sect responded in full.

Protecting with waters and cutting down those that resist, we left only those who surrendered with many dead to deal with.

The sign of battle as they landed back at camp, was unmistakeable. It was unclear who and where the defenders were. Tents were overturned, wreckage everywhere.

At last it was Arielle.

“They turned some of our own people against us. I stayed. Many of the missions returned quickly. Many regular sects were convinced that the Emperor was declaring war on all sects. I took the Silver and Gold sects that had returned. In the fury of battle many sects just left. While others fought us. Steven’s missing.”

“More battle is coming?” Anna asked.

“We need to gather the rest of those loyal, and mark down the list of sects staying with us. We will stay for a few hours more and then retreat. I have sects with us from all four empires, but many sects deserted.

We can’t return the sects to their own homes, but the Emperor must let his allied Emperors know who is faithful.”

*

Lucille found herself flying amongst many other sects of the loyalists. What had the enemy sects said to sway so many. It was obvious that their emperor depended on sects and could not destroy them, would not.

Their second senior Steven was dead or abandoned. Another was confirmed dead by the survivors, another had turned. Their group of 12 was now 9, but Arielle lead them.

The Imperial armies stayed, despite the risks. They were going to move carefully and identify any turned sects still operating there.

Most of the loyal sects returned to the capital city to be confirmed as loyal and then left for their home.

Anna’s three sect team offered to stay while the situation remained uncertain. Arielle and the sects from other empires also stayed until they could be lifted back home.

In all, 270 sects of their empire deserted. It was unclear but a few dozens joined the enemy. Most of the bronze seal left, while 1 silver seal sect and no gold seal sects left.

Their sects were better off than the other emperors. Even some of the top sects had fallen or fled, and fewer of the other empire sects rallied to Arielle’s banner.

Rather then meeting where Anna said the island of four emperors was, The Emperor invited his fellows to come there.

As a first order of business, the gathered emperors lauded Arielle, Champion of the Highest Heavens.

Word of 4 emperors in one city drew the enemies to them. The capital city was under attack, with the Imperial army still abroad.

The sects still gathered prepared to fight.

Lucille accompanied Anna, gaining an audience for the second time.

The Emperor was still a boy at 18, she thought.

“Lovely, Cultivator Ohnani, please distribute these Royal weapons to your sect. They will enable your members to fight beyond their normal ability. Paramour, the Divine power of the Throne is awakening. You and Arielle will be my vessels, power and trust and the lives of many depend on you.”

*

The loyalist sects local to the empire fought fiercely with the weapons of Imperial writ.

Arielle was the great storm that struck at the enemy army, bullying their own divine cultivators.

Anna was for once, furious. Her eyes were golden, the treasure swords of Emperor became fiftysome, and enhanced by the Divine rage, her waters became unending rain as she became an able second to Arielle.

The supplemental Divine cultivators helped to.

All the sects covered angles and approaches to the city, and Anna let her patron’s golden waves refresh the city and defenders.

Wave by wave the enemy came. Allies joined, Emperors blessed their best.

For a time, Anna followed Arielle, lost in the Sublime purpose for which she existed, she was burning beautifully for her Emperor.

Finally, she could go, no more. What time was it, what day? The elevated combat and much greater infusion of Divine energy had exhausted her to the last.

“You must rest, Anna. I will go on.”

Returning the extra swords to the treasury, polishing them with care, she took to the Emperor’s side. She was surprised to see Lucille there, engaged in vibrant conversations with all four emperors.

“Ah my love, come, we wait for the arrival of relief forces, the city is fallen, but we are strong.”

“Your sister’s way has sprung forward, said the only Divine cultivator of the emperors. She fought with a strength matching a new Divine cultivator, with the Grace you had. The over abundance of your soul. Ringing in pure waters, untouched by any desire but for your Emperor to live still and lead his people. The boon of power, which eventually wore you out lead to much more divine power leaking into her frame. Her uniquely social cultivation was kicked into high gear when she began speaking to us.

Few are prepared for the might of a Social divine. It is your purpose to explain and persuade, removing the bleeding wound infecting our sects.”

The next emperors spoke, “call to those who still remain uninvolved. Call to those proud to being Imperial. Call out the true Story of the Emperor’s consort. of one who wears their heart on the outside.”

Anna knew, the moment when Lucille broke through. Power flooded into her, and the connection between sisters thrummed with Divine energies.

<Final Sister Power: Realm Law: Twin Lives. All wounds up to and including death, heal in the presence of the other living sister.>

*

Arielle protected her as she felt her sister’s pure heart confession for the Emperor and Empire below.

.”to all who feel like the Emperor deserves this, hear the heart of my sister. She never married, traveling from town to town. She befriended a woman whose son was a cultivator but she was not. But otherwise she preferred to be called up to work on behalf of the emperors against the latest troubles.

When she became consort, she found her heart truly. Protecting the empire is good. Protecting the Emperor is her deepest faith.

The foundation of our life exists in the man who becomes emperor, the boy who becomes. Calling on our sect’s for aid only when required. He has no intention of destroying the sect system. He loves the sects.

Wherever you are out there. Please for your Emperor’s sake come forth. For the pure daughter of faith who fought with fifty swords in her liege-love’s defense, come forth.

Mighty roaring winds carried the words away.

*

Some sects came to their side that day, and hidden masters coming out from their hiding.

The war continued, and Anna still rested and spent days with the Emperors, Lucille tried to as well.

“Return to your sect,” the emperor said. Go, defend your homeland, be a signal Fire of the true way of the sect. The seals are shattered, and in the Fire of war they will be reborn.”

*

Arriving home, the sect was almost destroyed. The locals sympathetic to the sect, including the mayor were dead, and in their place traitors.

Lucille again took the place of highest cultivator, and they returned first to save their own. Seven cultivators had ascended to Shimmering and protected the sect long enough for the juniors to flee to loyalist compounds elsewhere.

Anna teleported to her, and they ousted the evil government of the City in a single day.

As Anna left, the sect seniors guarded the city and worked towards expanding the circle of Loyalist territory.

Lucille drew on Anna’s vast experience as the highest cultivator and pushed back against resistance.

The loyalist cell that held onto the sect juniors finally made contact. The Sect took over civilian government in the city until proper succession could be made. Civilians were placed safely as the sect rebuilt itself with the aid of the other loyalists to form a new fortified Sect-city.

The Imperial army finally returned, achieving much success while the enemy was busy in their lands. New cultivators swarmed into the city, and it became a center for waves of merchants and farmers.

The Sect city of New Hope contained the renamed Faithful Sword and Fan sect. The work of organizing construction, budgets, juniors and seniors was unending, but the Imperial army acted as roads of safety between a dozen major loyalist sects.

The Arrows and Vigilant Sabers had no intact sect to return too, they were given space to build suburbs as their sect home around New Hope.

Over the three years since returning home, the city had become bustling. The army established police corps, Fire and health organizations that the sect could not.

Fans were not known for acquiring spirits, nor fan cultivators known for being Divine. Annabelle was her first fan’s spirit, and nearing the end of the resistance, she was given a beautiful divine fan.

She began to host talks and socials but her personality was no longer so agreeable to anything, she was a firm defender of empire and emperors.

**

Anna gradually resumed combat practice months later. The army and Arielle took turns defending the city, while cultivators were directed to fan outward in sweeps with the army.

She rested with Daimon.

“Precedent says I should take you. You are already there, seeing a man in me, not a boy. I am ready, but for one thing. My family wants a political affair for knowing wife, but I can think of no one who stood by my side in brightness and darkness, but you. On our wedding day, I will take you, and you will be Empress, if you are willing.”

The outburst from the family quarter was there, but subdued because of the war. After all the justice and honors were given, there would be a three month veil of time apart. Watched over by her maidens, Anna would prepare herself for her wedding day.

***

Lucille lead juniors of the sect to identify remaining strongholds of Sectist resistance. Anything they encountered was with the junior’s power to deal with.

“Sect Head, this looks like another home that’s not reregistered with the Imperial bureau of Loyalist citizens.”

“Knock on the door.”

The faint scent of rose, and shifting currents of the petals were the only signs of the Golden power within her. Anna was right, this power was from the seat of Imperial divinity.

She prepared herself as the best house guest imaginable. The fan shifted, ready to aid and strike.

“Oh yes, hello.” Said the dweller.

“Our Lady of the Loyalist Sect Faithful Sword and Fan would like to share tea with you. Can you spare the tea?”

The woman lead them inside her home.

Working at it, she gathered cups and heated the kettle.

“Oh dear this last few months. The army is hugely important to get us our needs even. Are you working with the army?”

“We are working on the charter of authority given by the Emperor.”

“We’re an unregistered sect, we’ve always been unregistered under the old system. We’re weavers.”

“I’ll make a note for the army captain to get you registered. A mortal weaver’s guild would join the Order of Guilds instead.””

“We rely on cultivation too, dearie.”

Lucille let the blossoms scatter and in a moment she knew the true path of the weavers. Many of the young girls were innocent, others were established sect warriors who had slipped into the sect.

The overwhelming pressure to come clean brought two ‘weavers’ back upstairs.

**

Representatives from all the loyal sects, and from the other three empires gathered at the Palace in celebration of the war that began an expedition and ended in great losses on the home front. A victory but costly.

Nothing would ever be the same again.

Anna stood with the Emperor this time, as he stood by the throne. The army was recognized and its leaders honored. When it came time to recognize the loyal sects, He made a proclamation instead.

“From Henceforth, the Sects of this land are reorganized as guilds of Cultivators. The right to grant new guilds shall be mine alone.

The following guilds have already been reopened and active in the war efforts: The Faithful Sword and Fan, The Imperial Hammer and Axe. The Golden Saber. The spellworks (Staff), the Iron Sword, the Spool and Lamb. The Cook’s spoon. The Vigilant Saber. The Paitent Arrow.

New cultivators will have two choices in most weapons and styles. Expansion of these Guild sites has already begun. My consort, explain how the new system will work?”

“Cultivators in any guild will began at the rank of Initiate. Advancement is in a particular weapon or fighting style.

Initiate is the first rank. All initiates must be positively identified as not one of the Traitorous enemy.

Passing the first level practical and theoretical examination, initiates become acolytes.

Acolytes may ask to be evaluated for promotion which involves battlefield assignment and assessment in addition to practical and theoretical exam.

After Acolytes are Apprentices. Beginning the process of learning advanced arts, apprentices work with a master.

Testing consists of interviews with the master, battle assignment, character references, and interviews with the potential journeyman.

Journeyman and women must serve away from their guild for at least two years, in an aspect matching their guild abilities.

Presentation of journey accomplishments and interviews constitute the test for master. Both men and women are called masters. Serious efforts are required to meet the standard for master. We expect some who live a life apart from their guild as journeyers.

Masters begin the special path process. Each master may chose to be classified Master Aspirant, for those focusing primarily on even highly mastery, Master Administrator fir those working on the administrative duties of the guild, Master Public, for those presenting the guild to the people and Master Teacher, for those focused on educating juniors. All masters have a duty to take one apprentice, but educators take more.

Master Administrators became Grandmaster Administrators upon his highness’s personal review and consent.

Master Aspirants become Grandmasters, by the recommendation of a majority of the Divine Council.”

*

I was headed to the Faithful Sword and Fan for the traditional three months before our wedding day.

Women of the Imperial staff accompanied me as staff and advisors.

Daimon and I had our last breakfast together for a while. It was a nice quiet breakfast. His days now were very busy, the aftermath of war and repairs to the empire occupied all his time.

I would be satisfied with no more adventure, no more war. I traveled more slowly than was needed. Off the imperial roadways, signs of decay were still present. People had suffered for the dispute, the betrayal of the sects. How many small towns, once vibrant, faced a sect declared traitor.

Our own small sect town was now a quickly growing, yet young city.

The main city was centered around different sections of the guild. The new initiates facility was surround by businesses, but the acolytes and apprentices had supporting business nearby as well.

In the center of the city were three buildings. Headquarters of the Imperial army, who now was present in every major city, hq of the city governance itself, and the Guild Administrative offices.

There was a reception desk right by the entryway Amos a flood of people, none of whom I recognized.

“We’re flooded with applicants and questions from the community, so if you don’t have an appointment, I’m afraid we’ll have to ask you to leave,” the receptionist said, not even looking at me or my staff as I approached.

“I don’t have an appointment. I was looking for the executives. Ohnani.”

“No. You can see sub-administrator Johan next week if you fill out a form at the Enlistment center or Public Relations center.”

I turned back towards my staff. “I guess you’re right. We should have made contact ahead of time. This is a big time guild now.”

“Do you have an estate in New Hope?”

“Likely it was destroyed during the war. Half tempted to flare my power, but not really. It’s an interesting trouble, funny almost.”

I thought about it a bit. High cultivators could find lodging from the Army.

“Let’s go to the Army post.”

*

The army base in New Hope was small, since the reformed guild did so much work.

“As a Senior cultivator I was looking to see if you have any lodging for the night, as we pass through,” Anna said, trying to present herself as the traveling cultivator she once was.

“Yes of course,” said the gate guard. “Let me bring you to someone.”

The gate guard didn’t even delegate someone else for his post, but lead them into the base.

“Major, there are some cultivators here seeking lodging for the night.”

The Major was a distinguished older gentleman, quite advanced in rank although he seemed around Shimmering in cultivation.

“His Imperial Highness’ Consort. Forgive me, I did not expect to see your presence in this base. Come, I’ll give you my own quarters. How are you not lodged at the guild, if I may ask?”

“I’m not familiar with any of the new generation of administrators over there since my sister stepped down as lead administrator. I didn’t get past the front desk.”

“I guess they are caught in this massive expansion. With so many sword cultivators seeking to be confirmed a registered guild member in good standing. Then add in the Fan cultivators as well. This is now the only city supporting their specialization.

Anyway, let’s get you settled in.”

Although it was snug with her six assistants, the Major’s place was suitable.

They sat in the man’s living room.

“I think there were a few other minor sects like ours when Lucille and I started here. We had experience running a portion of the Orange Blossom sect. But then we were able to enforce our values. There was that early period of growth, and then only a few years after we became a Silver seal sect before the war.”

*

The new senior executive houses were in the inner ring of the security, protected by sect members working on guard assignment. There was a manifestation cultivator on duty every shift, along with their subordinates.

Lucille was now Executive Vice President for Senior Cultivation.

Tim lived next door as Executive Vice President for Sword Cultivation.

The executives for Fan, Hybrid Sword/Fan, Core Cultivation and Junior Cultivation were  all in the 2nd to last ring. Most positions had been filled according to recommendations by the Army board  of Loyalty. They were very experienced in running a large operation like this. Which Lucille wasn’t.

They now had passed 50 thousand Initiates on premises last week. 6 thousand acolytes, 2500 apprentices, journeyers were off campus but they had 800 out on their adventures. 220 masters and 45 grandmasters were on premise.

Because she and Tim had no family at home, often she would invite him over for breakfast.

One particular morning she was sitting with Tim, and startled herself. Her location sense. The intuitive understanding of where Anna was at, was much closer.

“Not close enough,”

“What’s that?”

“Anna’s here. They must have put her up for the night somewhere on the outskirts of the sect.”

“I asked them to tell me if any of my seniors in Sword cultivation arrived at the sect. Whatever time of day. I was up till 2 working through Earth forms.”

Sword cultivators had some impressive abilities at Opening. Her own power. Even in divinity was less flashy than Tim’s mighty strikes that imposed like mountains and filled the air with dust.

Even as a very junior Divine Fan cultivator, She only had Two others in the same tradition who were her senior.

The orange blossom sect was destroyed in the war, Dan sects on both sides either were destroyed or had to little left.

“Huh. Let’s head down to Administration. We can use this as a teaching moment, whatever occurred.”

She could fold others into her natural divine movement, s rare ability.

Tim said it was like being shot out of a rose blossom cannon.

Wrapping him up in her power manifold she surged like a blossom in a tornado, landing outside the admin building with Tim.

The unique qi signature of each cultivator functioned as id. They flared their qi and the doors opened before normal open hours.

The elevator was powered by advanced crafting and lots of natural cultivation stones.

Once more they flared qi to reach the 17th floor.

The army had sent an entire special construction division full of craftsmen and cultivators to build this building quickly. Not all the offices were used yet.

The Executive council room was where business was supposed to be done, but the executive lounge and restaurant was where it was done.

President Galina was talking with VP - Juniors as they ate breakfast. Michael was extremely busy with managed the most stressed part of the organization.

“Morning, Galina, Michael,” Lucille said. Tim waved.

“There was a VVIP who arrived yesterday. I have independent confirmation they are in the city, but neither Tim or I heard of where they are housed.”

“Hmm, I keep on top of that caliber of arrival, I have heard nothing. Are you sure, who?”

“Let’s keep this in the senior executives for now. My sister asked me if she could spend three months at the guild. A sort of sabbatical. I said of course the guild would love to have any Divine cultivators visit, let alone all of her other positive aspect.”

“Three months, interesting,” said the president.

“My sister and I have a rare bond that goes beyond just family, we are spiritually connected. She relied on some of my skills of years as a Fan cultivator and I relied on her vast battle experience and precision. I can tell where she is roughly, and Vice versus. She’s somewhere in new hope, I’m sure of it:”

“Maybe she just arrived this morning,” Michael said.

 LO: Where are you?

AO: At the army base. The major in charge let us stay in his residence. I’ll tell you in person the details.

She shook her head, “my sister’s housed at the army base last night. She would remember those old cultivators rights. Somehow the guild turned her away when she arrived. Who else will go with me to the base?”

The President spoke up, “Bring our Army liaison junior executive. They deserve credit for their hospitality. We’ll review our protocols to see what went wrong once more information comes in.”

They took the transport talisman, Junior VP Bert wasn’t comfortable with her divine speed. Tim was one of the few.

The gate spotter recognized Bert first. “Our guild buddy Bert. What can I do for you?”

“We were supposed to meet with the VIP yesterday and were so appreciative that the major hosted them. We’d like to introduce, or em, say hello and invite them to accommodations at the guild.”

“Right, I’ll pass that on to the Major right away, you can head right to your office with your guest if you want.”

Bert agreed. “I spend a lot of time here collating all of the vectors of our cooperation with the army.”

The jr’s office was part of the Postmaster / Quartermaster / administration building.

Major Zevran arrived just after 10, Lucille had almost fallen asleep watching Bert go through paperwork.

Their little sect was now an administrative nightmare with all the staff for the craziness.

“The famous executive and fan cultivator. Your sister is almost ready for the day.”

After thanking the Major for everything, she met Lucille, and they returned to the top floor of the administrative building.

She wore a lacy green dress white ruffles. She had stored away her third and forth swords back at the palace and carried her original sword and the gift from Daimon. While the sheaths could strap to her back, when dressed nicely she gave them to her staff.

“Welcome Consort Ohnani. We’re really busy and consumed with all of the new applicants and reviews.”

The President said.

“Understandable. Can you direct me to someone regarding property in the city, it’s probably best if I purchase something in the city for any future visits rather than burdening the sect.”

“Housing is in very short supply in the city at the moment. Lucille, what are your thoughts. The sect will definitely accommodate you.”

“You could stay with me. I should have enough room for your staff.”

Sword and Fan 2

The sect had seen a flood of Seekers at every level. She formed the Council of Admissions from herself, Tim and Hanna, to avoid the destruction of the Sect’s culture.

They set a firm policy on max growth in each section per year. The funding as a silver seal covered more but the culture didn’t.

-*-

Tim: what is your honest opinion on Women becoming swordswomen?

Elder Candidate: I think they’ve earned that right?

Lucille: what do you think woman still shouldn’t be doing?

Candidate: I think the Monastic and pugilist communities should keep their all male status.

Hanna: what is your Dao, as it pertains to the sect?

Candidate: The sword protects life as it takes life. I stand against the enemy of my family.

^^

We added 2 elders, but over a 1000 outer sect members. Construction and outfitting in the surrounding region were pulled in to start producing our new Silver seal quality sect.

We promoted internally where we could but our leaders grew by 500% over the next 2 years, representing this new group was a seasoned 80 year veteran coming over from the Orange blossom sect, as head of Grace and Gratitude the program all members had to follow not just the fan sect.

It was toned back but stiffened in other ways from the Orange Blossom. Less high persuasion, more elite esprit de corps and discipline. We were a graceful sect of emperor’s fsvoe but still his.

That process of shifting values was still undergoing as we filtered our students into a new tier. Core sect.

Our competitors in the silver seal competition in 8 years would be drawn from this level.

—<#

Anna was just as new to the current grounds of the Graceful Sword and Fan as the Imperial Guard detachment who surrounded her.

They were headed to the new Amphitheater for sect wide speakers and events. This was a proper sect in full now. Sect members were still waiting in line as the delegation passed through.

She had worn the Emperor’s favorite of her outfits. He was still 15, but they were friends. She felt a strong desire to protect and represent the Eagle.

It was amazing to see the crowds that had come from their sect idea, and a lot of hard work.

They met Lucille and the three team executives at the center of the amphitheater.

“Good to see you Anna.”

“Welcome Emeritus.”

“Thank you, it’s exciting to see what you’ve done with the sect. The Emperor sends his warmest regards.”

Motioning to her two Duty sergeants, they pass the perfectly white cases to her.

“The sword of my Youth, say hi Aida.”

Drawing out her first sword, she let it hover in the air where Aida stood on blade’s edge.

Drawing the second, “Markus, James come out.”

“Leopold,”

Her trainer and captain of the detachment stepped away from the rest.

“Brute force is useful,”

Leopold prepared an overwhelming attack, one so powerful the audience hushed.

Anna took the Emperor’s sword, stepped cleanly to the side of the attack, and in towards Leopold’s heart.

“But telegraphing a powerful attack gives you the option to avoid it.”

“Movement on attack, movement on defense is key.”

Leopold adjusted his attack, taking the same flexible movement. Strike, deflecting, movement press and strike again.

“Your advanced powers should smoothly go together with your combat style. I cannot fight like Leopold.”

Leopold strikes, his sword sprouting flame in each moment, in order to neutralize the waters. Anna strikes in long motions in which water bubbles out.

“Learn to deal with opponents who are stronger than you, I hope you don’t have to face Divine power, but Leopold are you ready?”

“Yes, milady.”

She weaves an attack where Aida piloted her sword to add extra strikes, while she struck with Mark and James’ sword.

He kept his distance, deflecting and seeking opportunities to strike.

“Next,” said Leopold.

With one sword again, she brought the divinity back into the waters, overwhelming Leopold’s Fire. Leopold stayed further back, taking a minor wound to his shoulder.

“Against stronger opponents, hold on until help arrives. Against weaker opponents, remove all openings. Demonstrate your quality not just your main strike.

If you have to risk your life, with no help coming, then look for an opening or unusual approach.

They stood at ready positions again, and now Leopold fired the cultivators gun. Anna dodged away.

“Didn’t take a chance on an attack you don’t recognize.”

“Thank you Leopold. Now, thank his Imperial highness, that one greater than I has graced your presence. We really can’t even fully spar at my level yet alone his without damaging sect grounds, but we can demonstrate our styles a bit. I imagine Chief Swordmaster Tim would recognize my style has changed, and so will yours as you ascend, but beginning with Humility and Grace you can find a solid starting point.

Are you willing, Steven?”

This new Divine favor cultivator landed from above.

Three swords swung at Anna in formation, burning with Divine lightning. She dashed back, and golden water resisted the lightning, just barely. Aida positioned the second sword to block and attack as Anna did the same. Thunder flashed and rain fell,

The battle drifted away from swords in one moment as water and lightning clashed, in the next moment swords met, and intense collisions forced Anna back.

She almost drew more power then but she stopped.

Three lightning bolts struck Steven, not harming him but lifting into the sky.

“Let your sword arts and Fan arts soar. Headmaster Lucille?”

“Actually, I am the Sect’s High Chsmpion now. We have formalized your role. I’ve handed off chief administrator duties to a very well trained leader and staff, and I’ve been going on those same missions you once did.”

“Great! Of course I’m free to join in any new wars, but I’ve become part of the Emperor’s team of champions on international missions. I’m actually the junior member of that team. In addition to Steven, there’s a Senior Divine Cultivator who is in the late stages of Divine cultivation. She’s our last response on these missions. At her level, the saber fight seems overrun by sheer power, becoming something new once again.

I’ll hold back Aida and stick to Elemental water.”

Lucille’s fan now had sharp dagger points at the end of each segment of the fan.

<>

Lucille leapt and weaved her body around to avoid strikes, but wasn’t able to get an opportunity to get close. Rose petals became thorny and ripped into the waters coming off Anna’s sword, but her basics were even better now.

The thrown daggers she released, and Anna adjusted, Lucille pushed away her sisters sword with her fan, always possessing poise until the next surprise.

She folded the fan down to submit. Parts of the fan were in danger from mighty waters.

“Thank you. All of you, Sword cultivators as well, would do well to practice your Champion’s style.”

With business-like efficiency Anna and her group left after the demonstration. She was used to battling Tim and putting heavy pressure on him. The fan just didn’t suit her requirements anymore, but how could she turn away from it?”

Lucille went up to the stage. “I hope that’s an encouragement as we set the new higher standard for our sect.”

—()—

“She fought inspired, knowing my limitations and working against my surprises.”

Hanna feinted with the sword, bursting in with fan.

“I’m still missing something,” Lucille said.

<>

Tim spent a few minutes evaluating each Core sect swordsman or women. There were more men in the lower ranks, but about 50-50 at core.

“Your psychology is hurting. Be confident but humble. The arrogant mind assumes her enemy can’t stop an attack. The sworder assumes he can.”

“More support from your lower body, you’re putting too much stress on your hands and arms.”

<>

Anna, Steven and Arielle stood with the Emperor and his senior guards. Leopold merged into his staff as well for the international meeting at the Island of Four Emperors.

Daimon was already divinely empowered, but he had grow into an affinity for staff cultivation, which reached the elemental stage early.

The powers of Divine Wind could spring forth from his Staff, but his Staff cultivation, apart from its power source, was at the manifestation stage.

Arielle used Divine fire, Steven lightning.

The emperors made their greetings, and Anna stood back with the others. Once they went into the meeting hall, the cultivators gathered.

“A new one for the Emperor of Bronze I see.”

“Arielle, arena 1?” Asked one of the other Senior cultivators.

“Come on, we’ll watch the lower end spars, I’ll tell you about what we do here while our Emperor is in talking with the others over these days,” Steven said.

Two of the junior cultivators started sparring in arena 4 and Anna and Steven watched.

“We spar and practice with our peers from the other nations. Arielle and Joseph are the two strongest cultivators of all 12 of us so they are sparring. You’ll have a chance to learn and test yourself in the last arena. Each arena provides more protection from powerful abilities than the last. Arena 4 isn’t much more than arenas back home

Arena 1 can contain astounding amounts of power without leaking damage.

We also go on missions to acquaint ourselves with the group. We’ll meet up with our leaders later and socialize as well.”

*

As the second most junior of the 12, Jacob was nonetheless significantly more advanced in cultivation and fighting than Anna.

“Develop beyond the single body, single sword mindset!”

Jacob disappeared and his peculiar sword style, using fencing rapiers, appeared all around him.

Multiple rapiers deflecting her attempts and launching the divine waters. His element seemed to be metal, and it gave him the power to form more and more rapiers.

She tried to parry every rapier, giving full force to her natural ability but she was still stuck in her old Modes. Start again. It was good that she was humbled.

Start again.

Just for a moment her consciousness occupied more, the water surged between her two swords, and gave her full control and power over both.

He was toying with her thought.

“Come on. Gotta let the other juniors spar here too.”

*

She worked with the Chief administration to create a position of Chief Socialite, giving the top Cultivator position to Tim or Ryan, a newer elder recruit who was the most advanced of the new bunch in Graceful Sword and Fan.

The Chief Socialite would be filled by the most socially charismatic cultivator, judged by Fan sect standards, but anyone could obtain it.

Many of the recruits from Fan sects had already started events where they invited Paraan city elites, and soon the city was inviting notables of the most prestigious sect that dominated their city’d economy.

Lucille had been on the list of last off-limits people when she became highest cultivator, but now she found invites easy. Rejoining society after the years focused down to a sect’s boundaries help.

Even her cultivation was improving again.

It wasn’t just Paraan locals, but influencers from the region showed up, especially once one of the sect founders attended.

She kept up her chats with Anna and filled people in when Anna let her/

“My sister is with the Conclave of Four Emperors. One of our Imperial highness’s cultivators. She says she is still the most junior of all of them in that crowd.”

“Why didn’t you move the sect closer to the Capital city when you gained Silver seal status.”

The mayor spoke up, “We were  confident we could server our distinguished sect’s new needs and enough people poured into the city to help construct the new compound.”

Lucille spoke up, “we think a sect should remember its roots, these leaves and branches started with the root, which is our unique philosophy and also this city.”

Daimon was planning a complex military operation with the three other emperors. The Jade Falcon empire had been attacked by the Divine Dragon, a sect that had reached Empire status on its own. Now they feared the Divine Dragon was getting ready to strike again.

The four emperors had agreed to work together to either destroy or severely weaken the sect.

The upshot for her was more time training with Jacob.

She learned to express her sword spirits into the increasing abstract battle landscape. And now could bring 5 swords to bear, one each for her three spirits, and the 2 physical swords.,

She could only briefly control all 5 fully effectively.

The day after the announcement about a longer stay, the 12 of them went on their first adventure.

“Many Grand Duchy’s and Kingdom’s exist without a Divine cultivator. They often call for aid in their internal disputes or when fighting monsters or even evil  cultivators.”

She never realized so many smaller nations existed.

Arielle and Joseph went ahead to gather a conclave of small nations.

“I own several hundred rapiers, I only use the best 20 or so. Get some real swords for your spirits, and then go nuts from there. You have to have some serious money saved up.”

“I put a lot into founding a sect with my sister. I’ll see what I can find when we get back.”

“Only Divine capable swords will work. Remember that.”

**

Representatives of all Sects were called to the capital, as well as all strong members of Bronze, Silver and Gold seal sects. The Emperor declared war on a very powerful nation-level sect, as required by their treaty obligations to Jade Falcon empire.

The Imperial Army was calling up all its reservists as well.

The sight of such forces when Tim lead them into the silver seal formation. Their sect was a smaller rectangle in an ordered group of Silver seal sect. The bronze seals to their left, and gold to their right.

The regular sects gathered all together, containing only a tithe of three elders per sect.

The Official in charge of Proclamations stood beside the general of the Imperial army and three others. One of them was Anna.

“The advance on the Divine Dragon sect must me made with more coordination than our normal approach. General Sang will lead the Imperial army’s advance, as a blocking force. The Sects will lead the charge.

All Sect members who are below manifestation, please report to the army for the duration of this war.”

Most sects didn’t bring any juniors, but a few did, and a trickle of cultivators left for the army.

“Representatives from His Imperial’s majesty’s sects, and His Writ of the Bronze Seal sects shall follow Consort Ohnani’s command. While she is still exploring the Divine Waters of Lake Myleh, she is quite capable. Her sword techniques have expanded from two to five swords already.”

Lucille was interested in seeing the latest evolution of her sister’s power.

“ His Imperial Majesty’s Writ of the Silver Seal Sect shall follow Cultivator Deveroux. The lightning cloud of swords shall guide you.”

“His Imperial Majesty’s Writ of the Gold Seal Sect shall follow Cultivator Od’assan. For the first time, our last and most powerful cultivator shall charge forth with all of her powers rather than staying in reserve.”

“His Imperial Majesty reminds you to observe the honor and safety codes. If a battle breaks out between Divine cultivators, those of the Opening stage and below should keep their distance and seek advantage in another way. Be prepared to divide your sect forces by stage.”

“There are hundreds of miles to reach out target, so we will provide a flight beacon for each of the 4 groups.”

Sword and Fan 1

The assembled forces unnerved her, as they were all seniors of many decades of cultivation, years of battle experience. She was proud to be called up, but nervous.

Tim was focused on his sword meditation. She found the practice weird.

The art of Fan and Sword was almost unheard of, she was blazing a new trail. The fan covered her face and her right hand held the sword. It was a lighter sword than the long sword Anna used and the Broadsword Tim used.

To consider Tim and Anna the same stage of cultivation was true but misleading. Anna was at late-stage Elemental Sword with two centuries of experience. Tim was early stage with significantly less.

She tried the Kata, thinking of Lucille and Anna’s styles as two sides of the coin, and combining them.

Sword and fan flowed together as one, as beauty and menace and sweet and sharp all gathered.

She only stopped when Anna and s group of onlookers stopped at their tent, and several people were staring.

“There’s a chance more of the sect might be called up. For now we need to contain this undead disease. It doesn’t just bring up the minor legends of the undead. It brings horrors when it infects Senior cultivators.

Don’t leave any one behind. The army’s advanced healers are ready to intervene.”

Hanna followed her sect leader as they hiked over to the source of the outbreak in a nearby town.

Artillery cultivators took the lead, and frontline cultivators, including their sect, stood in front of the artillery as protection.

“Drop into shadow techniques and cast them wild if we get rushed. Tim, focus your fires on the left, I’ll let my waters go to the right.

They covered a small part of the battle line, each melee sect covering the artillery down line.

The first group of advancing undead were stopped by explosive artillery rounds. The second round was less effective as the enemy cut into range.

Finally as they got close Anna filled half of their sect with waters and Tim with fires. She let her shadows cover those who survived the fire, nothing survived the waters.

After a few waves of this, the wights came out.

With the full attention of Senior cultivators up and down the line, Hanna only felt a little pressure as she carved into bone and demon flesh.

She unleashed all of her knives from the fan then folded the fan up and took down the enemy with her sword, which she called Roseedge.

When the undead monstrosities came out, she took a step towards Tim, and acted as a support to dart in and attack, dart back and dodge,

She fell back at the weight of the next group. Vampires of a least Late manifestation stage.

Under the weight of the enemy she rejoined others who were relatively junior.

Tim fought desperately against three of the vampires, while Anna showed off her might covering the next sect’s range too.

When Tim was pushed back by a gigantic hulking beast, she was terrified. Anna fought furiously and over several minutes managed to defeat the beast but another had appeared. The line was broken and wights, vampires and other horrors poured into their backlines, until the very highest cultivators in the land joined.

Divine light and Holy currents swept at the enemies. And a gigantic celestial sword skewered a second monstrosity about to attack Anna.

This was a problem calling for the very elite. The reserves were in play. Tim helped against the raging lower threats, Anna joined her seniors to help out, and the raging tide met Ultimate human skill.

The Army began pouring on additional top-assets only as they staggered and retreated.

The best of humanity had to fall back before they were overrun.

As they backed off the relentless assault subsided into a few lesser undead.

The army posted guards while they went back to confer.

<>

The battle of the Baying Undeath began one of the legends of the War against the Necromancers.

In the presence of necromancy, where your own soldiers could be used against you, the war was kept to the Buddhist Army and the elite cultivators.

Still cultivators fell and not all of them read their rites.

When the final confrontation with the Necromancers began, Anna went together with the strongest cultivators in the nation.

<>

The man wore the most severe and carefully preserved robes Lucille had seen.

“Administrator Ohnani, the Emperor requests your presence in place of the Graceful Sword and Fan sect. He wishes to bestow honors upon a member of your sect. The Bestowing is to occur on July 16th, the year of the Ram.”

“I will be there.”

Sean came to the door, while she heard his daughters coming down the stairs.

“You may bring up to 4 additional guests, besides yourself. Your Honored sect member, Cultivator Ohnani will be staying at the Imperial palace until after the bestowal.”

<>

Indeed, a few weeks later, Hanna and Tim returned.

Lucille discussed with Tim, and they made him 2nd Sword master, to cover the responsibility of overseeing the Sword cultivators and sometimes training the seniors.

Hanna became Chief adviser of Dual path cultivation. And both Tim and Hanna picked their successors as well.

July Graham was the finest Fan only cultivator of the sect, she originally intended to learn the sword, but thrives with the Fan. The Orange Blossom sect would have loved to have her.

She became Chief Adviser of Fan Cultivation, but Lucille was still looking for a good second for her administrative duties.

Power thrummed through the halls of the Imperial palace, even out in the guest wing. The longsword belonged to a friend of Uncle’s. The one friend that recognized her talent.

The power of her cultivation had rendered the sword unrecognizable. It possesses the nature of Waters now, and the spirit Aida/Aiden. The sword was very precious to her now.

Aiden mediated on the tip of the sword while it hovered above Anna. A globe of gold- tinged water surrounded them, Anna was attuned to water and could breath there as well as anyone could.

She could tell somebody was coming. The waters retreated into her sword, she landed an stowed her sword into her sheath, which had been replaced many times over the decades. She bought a very expensive sheath now, one Aiden was comfortable in.

Lady Ohnani.

“Come in.”

The servant arrived with the attire requested if her today. She had never thought about clothing beyond a bit of protection, and supporting her full range of motion.

Now she a dress of bluish green and little gold earrings, necklace and arm jewelry.

“The honor of my family and this Imperial servant crew upon the safe return of your sword Lady Cultivator. “

“Let Aida see something interesting when you store it. Thank you.”

In the presence of His Imperial Highness, no one was allowed to possess their weapon except the lineage of Emperor guardsmen refined by the Family.

Her hair, while short, was style to make it wavy and gleaming.

Feeling naked once more without her sword, she thought of the way Lucille thrives in any social situation and projected that.

The Emperor was 13 and was attended by his Aunt, and a few cousins.

The Emperor had a Regent who was much older.

“Honored Cultivator, would you sit by His Imperial Highness for breakfast?”

“Gladly,” she said projecting Lucille strengths.

“Your sword, does it talk to you? I have read stories about sword cultivators who talk to their sword or sword spirits.”

“Emperor, We understand each other really well, since I’ve spent the majority of my life with that sword. They do talk to me sometimes though.”

“Is there more than one?”

“I say they, because I knew I was supposed to be a Sword cultivator and I had to pass as a man for years. I was unsure of myself before I finally realized there’s nothing wrong in the Dao with a swordswoman. But the spirit prefers to still shift between Aiden and Aida, respectfully.”

<>

Breakfasts more fancy than the most ornate dinner she had over had. Day over Day, she sat with the Emperor.

“I’ve practiced with all the classics when I find time between my studies and appearances.”

She found conversation with the regent on a few evenings when she wandered out to the canopy deck,

“I’m on a short leash. They didn’t chose their best courtier, the family has barred themselves from regency. I was their most obedient family legate. So I’m a regent with strings.”

“I’ve been alone most of my life. Busy being an anonymous member of the Mortal sect, and then the outer sect. I was a wanderer and briefly a member of my brother-in-law’s family staff, until he died.

Then years as a member of a mercenary army, and eventually a wandering cultivator helping wherever I was needed. This last hundred years I’ve been part of building our sect with my sister and the son of an old friend of mine. The sect is great and I enjoy the professional community of Swords and Fans, but still my sister and I are lonely and we don’t spend as much family time as we did when we were kids.

I used to go by Ande when I was passing as a male sword cultivator as well.”

“It’s great to have you at the Palace.”

($)

Tim, Hanna, Judy and her husband Sean accompanied her to the Imperial Palace. The sect was on holiday by Imperial writ and the new Chief Groundskeeper kept the order for those who stayed.

The Sword, Fan and Dual Path exemplars along with her husband seemed a reasonable balance.

They were greeted by a large group of staffers spiffily dressed and other guests.

“Who are you here for?” One of the staffers asks.

“Administrator Ohnani, Mr. Ohnani-Cheltenham, and three seniors of the Graceful Sword and Fan Sect, here for Lady Ohnani’s bestowal.”

“Mr and Mrs, please accompany me inside, your guests may stay and mingle for the time being.”

We were whisked inside, where oddly enough, we were measured for fit and given clothes to wear. The dress was beautiful and extravagant, and Sean’s tux with the matching white flower was suitable for a wedding.

When she saw her sister standing beside the Emperor, she was shocked. Who was the Radiant Hibiscus and who was the Sword Elemental here?! The power of her Elemental control of Flowers threatened to flare, she resisted it.

Purple flowers intertwined with Golden chain which lead to a necklace of astonishing turquoise that her sister wore. The dress was made of something so precious she had never seen it before and the way it shimmered and showed her beauty was the sign of a Blossom crafter in the Imperial staff,

His Imperial Highness wore a suit with every cuff link hand engrave with old symbols. Gold and silver, ruby and lapis lazuli studded on the jacket that fit the young boy Empress. The staff surrounding were well dressed also, but not so extreme.

After a few hours of light conversation and waiting, the staff positioned Lucille and Sean off to the side.

The Emperor, his regent, and Anna stood at center. A man in white robes and smelling of incense finally arrived. Beside him another man in Golden robes carried a long black case.

After a moment the incense smelling man stood before the Emperor and Anna.

“Cultivator Anna Ohnani, please rejoin your Sect administrator while I speak to our Imperial Highness.”

She curtsied with perfect form and retreated back to us. I gave her a confused look, I didn’t even dare telepathic communication here.

“Is your assent given, Your Highness, uncompelled and freely given to Tie a bond between your person and one Miss Ohnani in consort. Her children born in future days will be sons and daughters of the Imperial family’s consort branch.”

“Our assent is given. Let her name become Consort Anna Verouelin of the Imperial Family.”

Speaking to the regent, the Minister said, “in light of our Highness’s youth, Lord Regent, do you assent.”

“On behalf of the regency and the Imperial family I assent.”

“Anna Verouelin, please step forward.”

Was Anna glowing. Something was certainly happening to her cultivation. Anna approached with all of her own grace.

Her sister started to glow in light that was only visible to cultivators.

“Anna Verouelin, will you give your assent, surrendering family and clan and sect to be joined to the Imperial family as consort.”

“I assent.”

The light accelerated, waters and light swirled within her spirit, until a massive storm of golden water erupted outward encompassing the whole room yet leaving none wet , before returning into Anna.

“What just happened? The minister said, leaving the script.”

Surprisingly it was the Emperor who answered.  “The Divine Favor of Emperors has accepted her. She is now at the beginning of the Highest stage of cultivation. The golden divine waters of her inner spirit will protect us all.”

“Is that correct Anna,” the Regent asked.

“I received extraordinary favor in your eyes, Daimon. I have received a vast divine treasury. I am yours.”

“You are very welcome,” the emperor said. “ Please accept the sword of our treasury, the sign of our favor.

The man with the long box carefully unfolded the most magnificent sword, it was given to Anna, who received it, taking the edge end and handing the pommel to the Emperor.

“Always in your service, your highness.”

“Thank you Priest-Magistrate. Now on to the rest of the Awards.” The regent said. “His Highness and Consort shall greet the guests, and pass out honors. Our Consort’s former sect shall provide the honor guard.

I watched as power unquenchable ran through Anna and even began to siphon into the Emperor whose cultivation level was undetectable.

We stood at the opened doors as the two were followed by staff. Still flabbergasted at the series of events.

The Honors and awards went to very powerful individuals and exceptional sects, and then the Graceful Sword and Fan sect,

“We consider the Graceful Sword and Fan Sect highly. While it is a new sect, only a century in existence, it is the home of our first Consort. Your sect has served in all the occasions it was called to, and Anna Verouelin has been a big part of that. We award the Honor of the Silver Star: Emerald Brooch.”

Lucille went forward and accepted the honor of the sect.

<>

AVD: Divine Favor is something beyond a stage. It’s more like connecting to a stream of beings than merely connecting to a power source. No matter how great you are, if no one answers, you can’t become Divinely favored.

LO: how’s the sword situation?

AVD: I can already handle two swords other than the one in my hand. The emperor’s sword has two sword spirits as well.

<>

Lucille became the highest cultivator in the sect in Anna’s absence, and she began to prepare the Groundskeeper to take her place. Tim was only a few steps behind, but when the next call up came, it was one person per sect. She made the groundskeeper acting administrator.

While she had always kept to her cultivation, having Anna there kept her pressure low. Now she dove into the fullness of her art, meditating into the afternoon and then rushing ahead of the convoy head to the new site.

When they got there, in addition to the usual army, Anna was there, dressed fancifully.

AVD: Those weeks before I ascended, I started being able to draw on your grace and poise, In the last hour before I was fully drawing on all your training and grace as well as mine. Sorry I didn’t explain before, it was all such a whirlwind.

LO: So I’ll be able to pull on your skills when I reach that point.

AVD: I think so.

I will be providing backup, now we don’t think this is another nevtomantic cell but we’re not sure, something is weird.

Lucille fought in the open field, taking her sisters place as she cleared the foul things that were not necromancy.

<>

She woke up, and went to breakfast with the Emperor. After the first few weeks, he liked her tastes and she had enough of a wardrobe to chose her own clothes that day, most days she only saw him as they shared breakfast and then he had many things demanded of him, and she returned to the cloister like Consort wing where a half dozen servants attended to her days,

She would change into training clothes and meditate in the morning, train with the swords at night. Sometimes Aida was her primary sword and sometimes the duo of Marcus and James, latent spirits formed from past swordsmen.

Sometimes she would meet with the Emperor and others for a major dinner but mostly she’s make a social call, dining with his family or with the regent’s family or at home.

It was after dinner, and she was observing the flows of this divine power that ran threw her. From the sea many miles off, waters met the heavenly power and divine water descended and poured into her, from there a stream growing day by day went the short distance to the young Emperor Daimon. But now a tiny trickle of divine power went another direction.

The meditation was cut short when another vast divine power arrived, it overwhelmed the power running through her, though it didn’t suppress or go against that power.

She wouldn’t find out the source until the next day.
