Harry Potter Themed Basketball GM

I've been toying with the idea of setting up a multi-team solitaire in Basketball GM with the Harry Potter teams I made for the game.

The rosters are randomly generated, but I am doing a redraft of all players with each team having restrictions and/or tendencies on who they can pick. I figured it might be a fun way to get some narratives and story ideas flowing.

The player names are drawn from a list of harry potter first and last names so there are a lot of similar named players to Harry Potter characters.

These teams stick to players 25 & under, and largely don't resign free agents unless they are still very young.

Dragon Inferno - They either rampage the world, and go all out to sign the best and take the championship, or stay with their treasure and save money and hope for stardom in the draft. Boom or Bust, no in between,


Wizengamot

The Wizengamot is another special case. They prefer to sign older players whenever possible, and trade for older players from other teams looking to get rid of their declining old players.

Story Idea Generators from Seventh Sanctum

A lot of these are fusions between stories I don't know.

I recognize the Odyssey and Romeo and Juliet in #3. It's not very well fitting to make that a Occult, Slasher, Horror tale.

I know Buddha's story a bit, but Prestor John, Golem and the little dutch boy I have no idea about. A politcal supernatural story is a funny juxtaposition of genres.

I don't really know Lady Godiva except for Godiva chocolate.

I've heard of Prince and the Pauper, but I don't really know the story.

#5 sounds interesting. Alice in Wonderland at a Rock Concert. It seems like something that might already exist.

Using the Legend of Johnny Appleseed is cool. I'm not sure if a class comedy is the right genre though. What about Johny Appleseed as a Occult, Horror tale from the perspective of the local animals watching this stranger plant these "apple" trees".

#8 I get the idea of a journey to the east, and maybe I could see the connection with farmers, but its a bit weird.

I don't know about Orpheus.

I don't know about the Dutchman but Merlin as a rags-to-riches class comedy tale has potential.

The story of Chicken little could be interesting.

I know Aladdin, and I know Sleepy Hollow, and of course I know Jesus, but talking about Jesus and a group of astronomers is interesting.


I'll stick with two originals from the generator and a mixups.

Meeting the Master

The Sword and the Go Stone, Part 7


This sword go game wasn't quite as stupid as Sandra thought. If all the battles went the way of the surrounding stones beating the surrounded, It would be a lot like regular go. On the other hand, if Michael was truly as good at swordplay as she was at Go, he could probably win in every situation and make it pointless But on a third hand, Uno would tune the difficulty just right, she figured.

The stones were not all the same type, even if they were all white and black. Michael and I were playing as white, so the sim would go first. Black had 10 black stones with tiny gold crowns on them, 30 black stones with silver crowns, and 141 plain black stones. I had 10 white stones with gold crowns, 30 black stones with silver crowns, and the rest plain.


"Ok," Uno's voice filled the room. "Michael, Sandra. The gold and silver stones are stronger sword fighters, your samurai so to speak. The plain stones are minions, without as much skill. This primarily affects the stones that are controlled by the simulator. Michael, in each engagement, you will automatically be taking the place of the strongest white stone, so Gold if there's a gold white stone, or silver, or plain. Take the Gold-class sword, silver-class sword or plain sword depending on which stone you are taking the place of in the battle.

Remember, a battle happens whenever stones would have been taken in normal Go. If the surrounding stones win the battle, the same thing as normal go happens, the surrounded stones are gone. If the surrounded stones win the battle, all of the surrounding stones that were taking away liberties from the surrounded, are gone.

Once both sides run out of stones to place, or pass consecutively, the game is over. Because of the battles, we are playing a variant of capture go scoring.

Remember Sandra, this is very different from normal go, in that if your surrounding 10 stones with 11 stones, its not a guarantee, its going to take some good fighter. You will have to a adjust a lot more than Michael for now, but I do think it will be fun for you both."

I sat at a go table with my virtual opponent, who was dressed up like a shogun. It was all just a simulation, but the moves were real. I needed to get a feel for how well Michael could fight, so I played more tactically, and aggressively than I would ever play in normal go. I would have a change to take some stones, and then my opponent would have the same chance to surround.

It was ten white stones against 4 black. Neither of us had used and silver or gold stones yet, except I used a silver stone for the final liberty that initiated the fight.

there was a flashing green light on the battle floor where Michael was supposed to stand. The local go situation was replicated with young grinning sword fighters wearing white robes. The battle put Michael at the front of the pincer, but there was a boot at the back and where two white fighters were fighting side by side.

The simulator flashed green, yellow, "Fight!"

Even for being the plain white and black stones, the computer generated fighters were good. They knew how to attack and defend and coordinate with each other. White had the numbers, and Michael got past his first foe's target when the enemy tried to block the white fighter on his side.

Having a surround was very good for sword fighting, as well as go, Sandra K realized. Maybe Michael had been seeing surrounds and escapes in a somewhere similar way to her this whole time, even though he was pursuing a different profession entirely.

With friends already encircling the enemy, Michael proceeded to strike two more swordsmen down while the simulated friendlies took out the last swordsman.

4 stones captured was surely nice, but now Sandra's opponent had a similar chance to take five of her stones. Her five were arranged like a stair step, trying to connect with another group. Black had nine stones facing off against her five. None of them were silver or gold on either side.

"The silver sword ain't bad. This one is a bit rusty," Michael said.

Now the tables were turned. Michael was wearing a belt that buzzed when the simulation considered him defeated. Then he would have to step away for the rest of the fight.

His position was at one of the ends of the stair, surrounded by three black side fighters. I had put him in a tough situation.

Michael weaved his way out of the surround, and while two of his other white fighters fell quickly, he managed to work against the three on one situation and bring it down to two to one.

Other black fighters made quick work of the rest of the friendlies just as Michael finished off the first three. Facing six enemies, he preferred a style of fighting by movement. He used the space of the room to keep the enemies guessing, and over a period of 20 minutes managed to defeat them. Those nine tiles were all off the board, in her captures pile.

Sandra decided to play good solid Go, on the understanding that there would be fights anyway.

They only got maybe a quarter way through the game before they decided to take a break.

"Uno," I asked. "How long do you think a full game would take to play?"

#1 responded, "Depending on the style of play, perhaps 40 hours."

"Let's go hang out with some of my favorite pros," I said to Michael.

"I don' t think this world is going to accept me. I had the compound AI on Shinamo give me neural programming for go while I slept at night. Everything I know about Exeter says its about the unprogrammed brain, about entirely human efforts to learn and play games. Actually it wasn't the plan I wanted. Shinamo is very similar. An entire planet of martial artists, when a computer system could just program their mind and body into a fighting machine. So its actually similar to Exeter. Its about figuring it out yourself, and enjoying the community."

"Why did you want to meet me so bad, other than the, uh, compatibility thing?"

"Let me tell you a story," Michael said.

I was high up in the Sword Masters' Challenge, which is a self-sustaining collective of sword fighting experts who accept new recruits and also hone and refine their skills to dizzying heights.

I came from Facebook's colonial network, but I always wanted to learn martial arts, the real stuff, not the McDojos. So I transferred my billions of Facebook points for 3 Toyota points. You see, the Toyota network covers almost everything for a gratuity, but you need a point when you want something special, like a transfer to different world, or a variety of in depth things. I believe the richest person in the Toyota network has only maybe 1200 points.

Anyway, I went to Shinamo, and immediately failed 4 times at the Sword Master's Challenge. So I went around the colony world, and learned from all the other subcultures there. Finally five years later, I tried the Sword Master's Challenge and made it past the sink or swim stage. I was challenged and crushed by the best, and had to claw my way up each rung of the ladder.

Instead of the league and tournament structure like you have here, we had more of a ladder structure, as we each challenged a more skilled foe than ourselves, and also tried to keep our spot by fighting off those below us. In addition, we had responsibilities around the compound, paying the bills, that sort of thing.

Before all this happened I reached a rank of 8-3, basically among the top 6 to 10 fighters in the Challenge. Our leader is a 9-1. I started fighting him in the ladder sometimes, when the other senior fighters were busy with chores or other fights.

He was just impossible to even touch in a fight. He was so far ahead of me, I felt like I had another 10 ranks to go to get close. I pushed my training and my technique work to a whole new level I had never reached before.

I couldn't even fight like that right now, because I've lost that mindset, that grace of form and perfection when you are facing the impossible that responds and moves into your shadow. The battles became more like a dance as I got better.

I became Coyote 9-1's best sparring partner, number two on the ladder. I think the others had given up when they started fighting him, or they had tried for a while and then given up. They had many more years of experience than I, but I could dispatch the 3rd best fighter with ease.

Finally I got called into the AI building by the Sword Master's Challenge's own Compound AI.

Ace, Maria and Alex were the nicknames for the three parts of the compound AI.

"Coyote doesn't want to fight you anymore," Ace said.

"Body and Brain surgery together has made Coyote the engine of perfection for the SMC program. He doesn't learn the way you do. He's already had it all along. He started SMC 137 years ago, and his body is regularly re-harmonized to prevent aging," Maria said.

Alex said, "You will not find any more satisfaction in pursuing martial arts. We know that you are a competitor, a professional, a striver, not a teacher or trainer."

"Your understanding is deeply internal and personal, and will be difficult for another person to receive and accept."

"You do have some form of craving to create something which has never been seen before."

"We do not have the resources to do such a thing. But we are willing to pay you Toyota points, if the Toyota HQ AIs find an interesting proposal. Do we have permission to fax a brain and body scan to HQ?" Alex said plaintively.

I idly agreed to this, and left the AI building behind me.

I hadn't taken a day off in the two years since I started battling Coyote on the ladder.

It was time to take one.

I ended up chasing the lava flows in Shinamo's volcano island chain on the Central Ocean.

I was watching lava spew and flow down a ravine from a hilltop 800 meters away. The sound, the smell and the sight of the lava was calming for my grief-stricken heart. That battle with Coyote had been my life's work, I felt. If I had been able to defeat the AI's perfect creation.

"Michael! Matsuko! Please Report to Central Compound AI Building. Please take the Air car."

An air car was landing behind me on the hilltop. I hadn't rode in an air car since I was 12. They were expensive, and Shinamo was against lazy transportation methods. I climbed into the gleaming silver sky car.

The speed limit for air cars on Shinamo was just under the speed of sound at 250. I had never heard of an air car breaking the mach limit. When I buckled up my seat belt, the air car lifted up into the air, and in an ascending climb, shoved me back into my seat with a vicious jolt.

I looked up at the gauge as I saw the speed climbing fast. The roar of the wind, the crack of a sonic boom, wait what?

We were going mach 4 by the time we got above the clouds, finally the pressure against my back eased up. Sky cars were not particularly aerodynamic, so this thing must be burning through fuel at a reckless rate at mach 4.

It only took 2 hours to get to the AI Compound Building.

The tiny Toyota flag out front was replaced with a much bigger Toyota flag.

"Michael! The backup AI has been flash updated with data and AI programming from HQ, You will be speaking with Abe, who is representing HQ."

I followed the directions to the server room of the backup AI. A hologram popped up.

It was a well-dressed Japanese man in a business suit. The man bowed.

Michael bowed.

"We always wonder how well transplants from the other corporate networks will do at Toyota, but we are pleased to say you have thrived and reached the highest standards of excellence with us. What I speak of is the highest of classified material.

"I'm sure you are at least familiar with Google's network. But I doubt you have heard of Go. It is a board game that once was played by emperors and peasants alike. Just as our martial arts traditions are an important part of our cultural heritage, so Go traditions were once part of our heritage."

"What does some board game have to do with me?" Michael asked.

"I know today, there's not a lot of board gaming in Toyota's network. We've got immersive full scale war simulators, all kinds of AI research and development, physical fitness and martial arts and some other areas we are known for, but not Go, or board gaming in general.

"When computers first started to defeat people in Go, the best players could recognize the brilliance to the computer's moves and began abandoning traditional ideas and heuristics to play computer style go.

"After a few more years of improvement, the best humans couldn't understand the computer's moves anymore. Go began its long slow decline over decades.

Japan was the first to embrace post-scarcity thinking, and left a lot of old stuff behind, but pushing your body to its limits was always something popular in Japan, and actually in post-scarcity the number of monasteries funded by their monk's stipends exploded. Go was seen as stuffy and boring, and it died out completely.

In England a small diaspora of Asian Go players introduced the game to intellectuals. A small segment of a small section of those people longed to cut away the alienation and dismissal of human skill in post-scarcity society. They built an enclave of humanity in London. People had to do everything themselves, no computer assistance. Go became very popular to pass the time, and all computer devices were banned.

Google's political and economic power was challenged in America and in other old strongholds, but in the isolated England, Google came to the fullness of power.

After space colonization was in full bloom, and a few subcultures had established colonies where they could live their own way. Finally, these self-reliant types from England established New London colony, and tied into Google's network.

There was steady conflict with the people who wanted to bring modern conveniences in, but eventually Google themselves established a new principle. They preferred that the centralized AIs would be the only computing devices on planet. The subculture became google's culture. People who worked on AI development had access to these things, but otherwise you would just talk with your colonial AI or compound AI.

The colonists on that colony and others that followed in its design, have relearned Go on their own, without the help of wikis or computer assistance. The New London group of Go players, wherever they are now, have their own style of Go different than anyone else, just as a result of interacting with their own groups and not others.

Toyota wants to reestablish a Japanese tradition of Go, and we want you to be our point man."

"I don't know anything about Go!" I said.

"We want you to take Coyote's place, and your second to be someone from the New London group. We want you and her to start the Go Master's Challenge."

"Her," I asked quizzically. "Have you already picked someone for me, I'm not really into working with women after living in a male only group for so long."

"We started paying for information on Go players in the top Go colonies on Google's network. Professionals. Players whose expertise in Go is at least in the same sea as yours in fighting. We would say that her style is similar to yours from two years ago. She is still clawing and climbing the league and tournament results tables against the other pros. She has a deftness under fire that is eerily reminiscent of your own style.."

"I take it the go master's challenge will be Coed then?" I asked.

"Sword Master's Challenge is grandfathered in. Go Master's Challenge must follow the latest rules. It will be a ladder and hopefully you will take inspiration from the pre-existing group, but its direction is up to you."

They showed me a picture of you, and they commentated a game where you dismantled threat after threat and won.

"The plan is that you will be flash programmed for Go over the next three weeks. You will not be conscious, your conscious mind has to be completely unaware of how to play the game in order to fool Exeter's anti-computer training sensors. Sephiroth is already inbound for Shinamo, it will arrive in 3 weeks."

"You will have 5 months onboard the Sephiroth while it makes the journey to Exeter. Plan out the Go Master's Challenge. There is a lot you won't be able to do until you talk with Sandra K. You can subconsciously play the game but you can't teach it yet. Your role is the alpha to inspire fear, dedication and drive in the best players that come to you. Sandra will be the primary teacher until you can recruit a dedicated great teacher. Sandra K is still a competitor like you, so she will primarily just keep the level of the community high by example.

When you arrive on Exeter, register for the tournament that's starting on the 42nd."

"42nd, what?" I interrupted.

"They make more days in a month, or less, to match the planets' orbital period. There are 65 days in some months, and 66 in others on Exeter. The orbital period corresponds to roughly 787 rotational periods.

"If everything goes right you will be placed in the beginner's division, because your conscious brain knows nothing about Go. Oh, also, everything you are learning about Go from listening to me will also be wiped away. You will literally have no clue about the game until you sit down to play it."

"Why this Sandra K?"

"As an AI, we can play Go better than anyone, design a better sword fighter than any human and many other things. We also understand human relationships better than humans do. This Sandra K is more compatible with you than any pairing we've seen in a long time."

After I extricated myself from the awkwardness, I decided to go along with it all, being at the top of one of these Masters' groups sounded fun even if I didn't know the game.

First thing the next morning, I went into the Compound, and I didn't wake up for three weeks. I had no clue about Go, all I knew was that I was going to go to Exeter to play some fun new game I'd never heard of before. I was a sword fighter that wanted to branch out.

The AI must have been joking about planning the Go Master's Challenge while in transit, knowing nothing, not even the name of the game, I could only plot out an abstract plan for the challenge. Ranks and Sink or Swim week were about all I could come up with.

When we transited into Google's network, we were accompanied by a Google ship for ten days. The ship AI scanned our cargo and all of us onboard before accepted our destination request, and leaving us.

I spent most of the trip writing down my thoughts on fighting Coyote. Thoughts about excellence and computers and why computers rip apart human excellence when they replace it with mechanical and transistorial advantage.

Finally we got to Exeter and I got off, along with two others. The rest of the passengers stayed on board. The Sephiroth AI said it would remain on colony for two days before it left.

I went to register for the tournament. Found out for the first time, again, that it was called Go. Submitted to Uno's unfair advantages scan (handheld computer devices and computer Go players were scanned upon entering Google's territorial space).

I woke up at 4 to a big boom. Rubbing my eyes, I leaned out of the hotel doorway. Others were peering around too. I turned on the TV low.

There was a go channel.

Jin W. #1 seed, Kevin J. #2 seed, local favorite Sandra K #3 seed.

The tv showed the three faces. I saw Sandra again, for the first time since Shinamo.

I watched league results all the way from the Kids league, Kids elite league up to the small Pro league on Exeter. Sandra K hadn't been travelling to other worlds like the rest of the pros. She preferred to stay on Exeter, and she taught a lot of Elite kids and Elite amateur level adults.

Finally, it was time to go down to the Go center at 3:30 and go to my assigned table.

The center gave me a set of white and black go stones, since this was my first game ever and I didn't have a set. The old man at the equipment desk said, "Good luck. I'm excited to see a new adult try the game. Don't get frustrated." If I'd consciously known how good I was at Go I would have grinned, but consciously, I felt stupid and clueless.

Uno probably took no notice of me at first.

I sat down, and no one was watching my game against some kid. My hands knew where to place the stones. I had no idea how to play.

I obliterated that kid. Made him cry, A few faces looked at the end of the game board. My white stones were everywhere controlling territory.

I had to wait 45 minutes for the next round. I could play pretty fast since I wasn't really thinking about the game, I was just reacting to mistakes like I knew how.

I think the brain program interacted with me actually touching the stones and playing, as i got better with each round, even though my opponents were better too. My 2nd round opponent in Beginners was better than my 1st round in Intermediates."

"The only real surprise was when I got paired with Sandra K in the first round of the Pro's divsion. I would have thought I would match with the best pro.

My subconscious training was not only designed to win, it was designed to detect Sandra's style and lose subtly. Since I didn't really know what I was doing, I couldn't avoid it. I lost."

"And that's my story," Michael said to me.

"So Go Master's Challenge would include a week of constantly playing and challenging. Hmm, there's no physical exhaustion aspect, but I suppose we could force them to constantly play until mental exhaustion sets in, and test their mental stamina."

"We can't test their Go skill because Toyota network doesn't have any Go players. So we will need to teach them how to play, and then get them to play each other. Testing mental and physical resolve sounds right to me.

"Make them talk about Go concepts while they go on a 3 mile run," Michael said.

"You need to put me through the physical training first thing then. So that when we get our first group, I'm in shape, and I can push these recruits hard."

I regretted immediately that I ever asked Michael for that.

The Matho-Dungeon Settlement Sphere, Part 4

The negatives were easy in Red-Belt dungeon, but the big digit multiplications were messing me up. I needed to be careful, but I was starting to care less about the star status. I preferred to work on the dungeons in peace. It was quiet in the door room, finally.

As soon as I walked into the Black Belt dungeon, I knew the whole thing was some kind of different Novitiate final exam dungeon.

Monsters were there, but they were lead by a goblin with a bullhorn, and they were on my side.

"The Mathomancer is here! He will save the day. Hey Mathomancer. We're going to go out there and attack the enemy, and you're going to be our fire support. I know each type of enemy is weak against certain types of attacks, so I will yell out suggestions for your arsenal."

This dungeon was wider than the rest. Instead of a narrow hallway, it was almost 60 yards wide. It took up a vast section of the Novitiate compound, I guessed.

There were walking flowers, and murlocks and goblins and halflings and squirrels on my team. They ran forward, and I grabbed a stack of paper and ran off after them.

It was pandemonium! Red Pixies and Blue Pixies and Green Pixies and a few black pixies were fighting my teammates.

The goblin bullhornist spoke into his device.

"The red ones are weak against Arithmetic! The Blue ones are weak against subtraction and negative numbers. The green ones are weak against Multiplication. The Black ones throw everything you've got against them but especially division."

I went against the black ones first.


7 * 3 - 2 + (105 / 21) + 9 = 33

boom, 1 black down, giblets spraying around his compatriots.

The shouting of math was making it hard to concentrate.

111 / 3 = 37

boom.

There was a big group of red, blue and green, with one black in the middle.

I took inspiration from continued fractions, and decided to deliberately try for an explosive overkill.

The black pixie exploded, skewering a dozen other pixies.

I grinned, and focused on another group that was far away from my allies. I had forgotten that algebra problems didn't work before.

The dungeon shook, and my ears rang from the booming explosion. Smoke filled the air where the group of pixies has been.

"Mathomancer is boomiest! Charge!"

It was only another thirty seconds before the battle was won and stragglers were caught.

"Congratulations, now hurry on ahead," their shouter said.

I  hurried on ahead, to where a stand with an intricate gold robe was hanging. It had tassels, the back of the robe listed my Novitiate Accomplishments.

I walked out of the Novitiate dungeon, out of the Novitiate door room, and out of Novitiate life for good.

I got another hotel room across town, near the Initiate Center.

There were fewer initiates in 104 than Novitiates, but there were a lot more study rooms and restaurants even inside the center.

I even saw some older people, in their 40s here.

Instead of by belts, everything was organized by animals. And there were two separate sub-facilities. One for Geometry (hate!) and one for Algebra (easy!). I decided to start with geometry to get the news media out of my face while I struggled with diagrams.

Soon, I was standing at a whiteboard, watching a stingray draw a diagram.

"What numbered angle refers to the same angle as DEF?"

All I had to know was how angles are identified by their vertices. Easy. Angle #2.

I was right, but even with the easiness, I had to think about it, and get a headache like I never got in Novitiate stuff. I knew I could blow through Algebra though.

He draw another one, and was asking me about the perimeter of a triangle where all three sides had their distances labeled. This was just arithmetic in disguise.

24 cm. Easy.

The next one was the walking talking stingray drawing a cartesian coordinate system, and asking me which points were on the diagram and which were not. Cartesian stuff was easy for me.

(-5, -7) was not on his whiteboard axis graph.

I couldn't figure out how geometry would be useful for combat, it was too slow, but I supposed it was a helpful foundation for knowing later, more advanced maths.

The next one was an algebra problem transplanted into geometry. It was a linear equation, but the answer was an angle. 80 degrees.

The next diagram and problem was stupid easy. It asked whether the angle was acute, right or abtuse. It was obviously abtuse.

The last one the stingray asked me was straight up algebra:

q = 6.

I got 2 gold for defeating the first stingray's problems. That was a lot of money

I moved forward, nervous for once, about what the next foe would throw at me. It was another Stingray at a chalkboard.

The first one was triangles that were obviously not the same, and it was asking if they were congruent, I said no.

Then there was an area of a parrallelogram with a side length of eight and perpendicular length of 5. I thought that's the same as a rectangle area. I answered 40, and I got it right.

The third was a diagram the stingray drew, that showed another angle that by the angle addition formula should have the same angle as the first angle. So I gave 35 deg. as my answer.

Then it was another algebra problem:

k / 6 = 4 / 3
k = 24 / 3
k = 8

Then, the Stingray showed me one that gave me pause. It was a cutout of a geometric shape and I had to figure out what shape I could make from it.

 It looked like a square pyramid after I thought about it. 

Then the sixth one was a simple angle addition one. the given angle was 149 deg. 

149 + x = 180 = 31.


I got two more gold.

I got a battle situation after that. Stingrays started to swarm. Since I couldn't very well draw geometry in battle, I used angle addition. Perimeters, right triangle lengths, anything I could come up with quickly to smash the stingrays.

As long as I didn't have to work on some complicated diagram and prove something about it.

The Matho-Dungeon Settlement Sphere, Interlude 1

The Dungeon Monitoring Center in the Federal Building was for monitoring exceptional young war-fighters in the dungeons. They had to be truly exceptional to rise to Jim's attention. He brought the best right to President Phearson.

It was incredibly quiet that morning. I was the top of the Monitoring Pyramid. Local centers promoted their favorite possibles to the junior operatives at the federal center here. Then my juniors promoted to the senior officers under me, and the best they brought to me.

I docked anyone pay if they sent me someone who wasn't even in the ballpark. I wanted anyone in the ballpark of being Sphere level talent.

Talent was different from rank, you could have an untalented mathicist who through steady years had reached a rank of Journeyman E-4. He might top out at E-5 or E-6, but he would never be able to be an Elite Dragoon, or be a worthy test case against the Unknown Dungeons.

The Rank system was a property of the sphere itself. No one had ever gone past Journeyman O-3. Those who had reached O-3, President Phearson would call her Unknown Blasters. She had control of all of them, and used them to try to defeat the unknown dungeons.

The Blasters had defeated one previously unknown dungeon and reclassified it as Journeyman 0-3 +8 status. They were a quarter of the way through another which they were thinking would be a 0-3 +10.

The plus numbers were a government designation of extra extreme danger and difficulty.

It was slow. Slow slow slow. Even Jim's three direct reports had not received any dungeoneers to track.

90% of the time, those brought to the Federal Center's attention were a flash in the pan and they struggled more and more as they moved up. But the 10% were worth it.

There were monitoring numbers indicating the number of various special star classes of each rank and subrank.

"When's the last time we've looked into a Novitiate?" Jim asked Jeff, the best of his three reports.

"Last February. Was a burnout who flaked in the Initiate dungeons."

"When it's slow, I look at the monitor numbers, I never see anything under Diamond Star Red Belt Novitiate. There's a 1 there now."

"Pulling his details up," Jeff said, going to his desk.

Jim stood behind him.

"Is he in a dungeon now?"

"Hospital. Region 104. News has caught on and was interviewing him. Oh---"

"What," Jim asked.

"He told them he exploded a Brute so explosively that he was hit with a chunk of concrete. His eye's all messed up."

He could be dangerous, no sense of proportion.

"I'm taking the case," Jim said. "Route all tracking to me."

Jim went to his desk.

He had gone through all the replays. Edmond Bauer was super-confident, and super-accurate. Well equipped to solve problems many ranks beyond his current one. Many many ranks. He even tried algebra orally, so he didn't realize more complex math had to be written on paper. Brilliant, but missing the boat on some stuff. Potentially very useful. And potentially very dangerous.

Finally, Edmond made it back to the Novitiate door, and into the Red Belt dungeon.

Some Novices had a hard time with Red, which extended multiplication and division to include negative numbers. It also added in a few three digit by three digit multiplies at the end of the relatively large puzzle section.

Edmond worked out the three digit multiplies, but missed one of them due to sloppy work. Jim was about to give up on Edmond when he got to the combat section.

It was all brute problems, where it was a challenge to do anything at all to the heavily armored monster.

Jim could tell that Edmond was holding back, crossing out work that might get him hurt again. He paused and zoomed into the work. Edmond knew his arithmetic and algebra very well, far before his time. His stuck to huge multiplication and addition problems, which weren't his best area, because he slipped up once again.

He ended up as a Silver Star Black Belt Novitiate. The news media filtered out at the news. But Jim knew it was because he was holding back.

The Black Belt Battle Royale would be a chance for Edmond to prove his worth to Jim and use his skills.

I woke up, and turned on the TV in my hotel room.

"... first Platinum-Track Green Belt in region 104."

Click.

"...Bauer"

"Hey kids! Remember to ask your parents before you try any math at home. Home Accidents are preventable. Math is dangerous! Until you're ready for Math, stay safe and use protection."

The gov funded ad ended, and a show came on. It was about a forensic science team, like CSI or something.

"What did you find out Billups?" the lead agent was asking.

"Our perps definitely were running an underground math lab. One of them got a little excited and actually talked to the other about math, and managed to cut the sorry sap's head in two."

"What kind of purity are we talking about? Tell me its just algebra?"

"No such luck. This is some highly pure stuff. Mathematical foundations," the CSI agent whispered one more word, "proof".

Math everywhere, and no one breathing a word of it.

I clicked off the TV, took a ten minute shower, got dressed, and went down to get breakfast.

Some big wig came down and sat next to me.

"Special Forces are tracking your progress. Congratulations, you have a standing letter of acceptance the day you reach Journeyman rank. You are big now, Bauer. Bigger than you even know. Go with the best," the guy in a black army jacket said to me.

"I'm just a novitiate! I could fight those zombies in my sleep. What makes you so impressed by that?" I asked, dumbfounded.

"Most regions have never seen someone breeze through the Novitiate stages so quickly. Do you realize it takes some dungeoneers 6 months to get from No Belt to Green Belt. Some never get past Yellow belt at all. You just blasted through all of that in one day."

The bell man at the door already had a limo prepared while I was eating.

"Mr. Bauer."

I pantomimed talking to the people in the Novitiate common room when I got there. And the people in the dungeon door room. Most people spent more time in the common room than in the dungeon door room or in the dungeons themselves.

I said good luck to some No Belt. He turned white after being addressed by me. I jumped into the green belt dungeon with ablomb.

I saw the pattern, first a few puzzle monsters, to establish the new concept, which was very simple divisions in Green Belt dungeon. Then regular monster fights.

28 / 4 = 7
12 / 3 = 4
90 / 10 = 9
45 / 9 = 5
44 / 11 = 4
2 / 2 = 1
0 / 37 = 0

One tiny dragon whelp down.

16 / 2 = 8

after the first puzzle, the second tiny dragon said, "I am 8 and my friend is 0, what am I when divided by my friend?"

Division by 0 was not defined, so I said nothing.

The monster said after a minute, "Good answer."

His puzzles continued.

4 / 1 = 4
0 / 1807 = 0
56 / 8 = 7
49 / 7 = 7
15 / 3 = 5

Then I faced the combat portion of the dungeon.

Addition and subtraction weren't cutting it anymore, so I used multiplications and divisions to toast the dragon whelps without getting any blood on me.

108 / 12 = 9  was an impressive cracking and gruesome death but no splatter.
735 / 15 = 49 was a blood splattering.

I got bored with the easy again, and so I stumbled upon splattery problems.

The battle finale wasn't too bad, I stuck to simpler divisions and finished with a perfect.

I got my Diamond Star back, now with a Blue Belt.

The day was a blur! Blue Belt Dungeon was about Wolves and multiplying 2 digit numbers by other 2 digit numbers.

I made a mistake in one of the puzzle problems. I didn't even get a Battle Finale, and I ended up with a Purple Belt - Gold Star.

Purple Belt Dungeon was about dividing 2 and 3 digit numbers by 2 digit numbers, and including the remainder in the answers.

I restored my dignity by getting a perfect on the puzzles, the battles and the battle finale, but it looked like my star rating could only go back up one level at a time, as I was awarded a Brown Belt - Platinum Star

The brown belt dungeon was different from the ones before.

Just inside the entrance was an oak podium with a laminated note and stacks of paper and pencil.

I read the laminated note:

"Ability unlocked. Write mathematics on paper to solve puzzles or for combat. Separate each problem with a line across the page. Order of operations, except for where modified by parentheses, multiplication and division come first and then addition and subtraction. Within these two groups, operations go from left to right. Monsters will be giving you their puzzles on paper.

When using spoken mathematics use phrases like all together or put that together to indicated that a parenthesized group has some other mathematics done on them. Or you can laboriously speak out your parenthesizes for slower detailed work.

Feel free to pick  your favorite pen from the bucket."

I picked up thirty pieces of paper and two gel pens.

The first monster was a troll, he handed me a piece of paper with puzzles.

2 * 3 - 2 * 3 + 2 = 2
2 * 4 * 8 - 4 / 4 = 63

The second monster was a troll too.

(17 + 34) / 17 + 2 * (1 + 3 / 3 + 1) = 9
(2 * 2 * 2) + (3 * 3 * 3) - 1 * (2 + 2) = 31

I spent time working on these problems on paper.

The combat section was even slower zombies. Spoken math had no effect because they were waiting some kind of heavy duty plate armor as they shambled extremely slowly.

I started a new page of paper, and wrote:

1 + (1 + 2) + (1 + 2 + 3) + (1 + 2 + 3 + 4) = ?
1 + 3 + 6 + 10 = 20

The first zombie collapsed. The second platemail zombie shambled towards me.

1 * 2 - 3 + 16 / 4 - 1 * 3 + 5 + (1 - 2 / 2) * 5 * 25 = ?
2 - 3 + 4 - 3 + 5 + 0 * 5 * 25 = 5

The second zombie collapsed.

"Perfect! Bonus Brute-Type Challenge. Come up with a mathematical attack that can hit this brute covered in five feet of concrete."

I couldn't even see the brute, just the concrete.

I started a new page.

In my head I was thinking about the binomial expansion: (1 / 2 + 1 / 2) ^ 4

I wrote down:

(1 * 2 * 3 * 4) / ((1) * (1 * 2 * 3 * 4)) / (2 * 2 * 2 * 2) + (1 * 2 * 3 * 4) / ((1) * (1 * 2 * 3)) / (2 * 2 * 2 * 2) +  (1 * 2 * 3 * 4) / ((1 * 2) * (1 * 2)) / (2 * 2 * 2 * 2) + (1 * 2 * 3 * 4) / ((1 * 2 * 3) * (1)) / (2 * 2 * 2 * 2) + (1 * 2 * 3 * 4) / ((1 * 2 * 3 * 4) * (1)) / (2 * 2 * 2 * 2) = 1

The expression was simply an expansion of 1 ^ 4 so the result had to be one. To actually calculate it out in every detail would take fractions, I realized.

It rapidly dawned on me that I'd done too well a job. The brute exploded so hard that a piece of concrete smoked me in the eye.

I had already received my Diamond-Star Red-Belt when I came back to consciousness.

I shakily walked out of the dungeon with an injured eye. Already covered in whelp blood form earlier.

The entire Dungeon door room was filled and flooded with people.

There was a scuffle as a dozen reporters tried to shove microphones in my face. One lady won the fight.

"It's official! You are the 2nd person ever to be awarded a Diamond Star Red Belt. The 1st is President Phearson. I expect you're going to be invited to the Presidential Palace in the next few days. What do you think about all of this?"

"I'm just having fun, bored actually."

"Bored," another reported gasped. "You move so fast this has to all be brand new to you. I spent three months on the dungeon you just came out of. Anyway, what's going on with your eye?"

"Flying chunk of concrete. The bonus brute exploded when I defeated him," I said. "I need to see a doctor or someone about this eye."

The reporters were stunned.

"I've never heard of anyone even causing a crack in the concrete, except for the president maybe?"

The murmur amongst them was steady.

I didn't care about that. I waded through people like a sea, and got to the limo outside.

"The nearest hospital please, and step on it."

The waiting room at the hospital was a mile long. I felt a bit nauseous about being let in first ahead of all of those waiting.

I walked into the Novitiate's Yellow Belt Dungeon

A gnoll in leather armor stood twenty feet into the dungeon.

1 + 4 + 9 + 3 - -7 = 24

I had to think for a second with some of these. Not too hard though.

A gnoll in chain armor was next.

"Show me something!" the orc said. A rack of spears was next to him. The orc picked out a spear and slowly cocked back, ready to throw it.

Another strange voice shouted, "Use your mathematical knowledge to attack the orc. Shout your favorite math, if its true you'll get a hit, if its false, you're getting speared."

As the spear flew through the Air I shouted, "73 + 37 = 110"

He started chucking spears fast, but after "88 * 8 = 704" the spears were flung back at the goblin and he exploded.

"Bonus - Combat Test complete. Remember, more advanced mathematics may take more time to prepare but has a much deadlier effect on your opponent and his or her attacks!"

I had 30 more silver and an Orange Belt with a Diamond Star.

I hadn't had a chance to use my Streak special ability yet. I wonder when they are going to start throwing this so-called math combat stuff at me.

I rushed into the Orange Belt dungeon without any fear or hesitation. It was zombie themes

It started back with the non-combat problem solving monsters again. Zombies who wanted to multiply.  It all blurred together for me in boredom. This was times table shit, not something that should challenge an adult.

Finally they got into the combat challenges, as the zombies who sludged towards me didn't have any numbers on their heads. I toyed with them, trying to see how hard different mathematical facts hit.

.The zombie barely twinged in response to 1 + 1 = 2. 0 + 1 = 1 somehow had a bigger impact. 9 + 12 = 21 was like a slap to the zombies face.

I finished the zombie that was getting close with 45 * 8 = 360. I was best at using heuristics and algebra to solve multiplications that looked hard without much difficulty. 45 * 8 equals 90 * 4 equals 180 * 2 equals 36.

Then I was facing two zombies, both as slow as the first one. 19 + 29 = 48 {20 + 30 - 1 - 1 = 48} knocked the first zombie down but didn't kill it.

I tried to figure out how to use algebra for combat. "If x^2 + 6x = -9 then x = -3."

There was no impact. I tried one more, "For the polynomial x^2 + 1 = 0, the roots are i and -i."
No impact. Maybe I had to somehow advance more before I was allowed to use algebra in combat. 

More arithmetic for me. I wondered if I would get applause coming out of this one. I decided to dispense with the games and just spit math rhymes like a rapper.

"101 * 101 = 10201"   boom!
"5 * 99 = 495"  boom!

I ran forward trying to see what my max range on mathy destruction was. From sixty feet, "10101 * 11 = 111,111." The zombie was flayed and gibbed something fierce.

For my next test I tried decimals . "4.3 * 4.3 = 18.49."

Nothing. I tried fractions.

"7 / 3 + 5 / 7 = 64 / 21."

The zombie was splattered so explosively some of it ended up on me. Combat respected fractions but not decimals. Interesting.

I decided I didn't want zombie gunk  all over me so I stuck to multiplication and big additions and subtractions.

I tried a division problem and got even more splattered. 

1170 / 13 = 90 

Zombie grossness was running all over me. My nose was splattered in that stuff.

"Perfect!Battle Finale!"

  123 + 456 = 579
  18  * 3 = 54
  107 + 93 = 200
  -50 + 145 = 95
 73 * 7 = 490 + 21 = 511
 88 * 7 = 560 + 56 = 625  (INCORRECT!)

I had made my first arithmetic mistake. The zombies came rushing much faster. I recovered and finished the last five.

100 * 10000 = 1,000,000        (I got splattered with zombie guts for this easy one.)

16 / 4 = 4                              (splattered)


"Battle Finale successful! Green Belt with Platinum Star constructed."

I returned to the Novitiate Room.

It looked like there was a group of novitiates wanting to accost me for going to fast when I came out of the dungeon. One look at the zombie junk that was covering me and they skedaddled.

It was time to go back to my room. The Novitiate gathering room went from a dull roar to dead silence as I came through.

My mind came back to the fact that I didn't seem to be getting my streak special advantage. Unless the enemies I got to skip were just never showing up at all, so I didn't know that I would have faced them?

My streak bonus had increased. And I now had a total of 85 silver and some miscellaneous coppers in my pocket. I used to have to sweat every copper.

The Rank-Master was standing at the outer door of the Novitiate dungeon grounds. 

"Let me get you a limo. Region 104's first Platinum Star Green Belt! Ever! You'll be mobbed if you try to walk back. How did you manage to get zombie juice all over your face?"

"Fractions," I said.

"You realize that's black belt and beyond stuff right? Really its a tool for Initiates, but you pick it up as a Black belt," the Rank Master said.

The crowd pressed in around the limo, but the driver managed to get me in, and I waved goodbye to the Rank Master as the limo driver slowly moved away and weaved through the crowd.

Why was I famous just for knowing basic grocery store arithmetic? And no one seemed to know about decimals, just fractions.
